In a two run game the Escanaba Yoopers got by the Buffalo Nickels by
the score of 5 to 3.
 
Catfish Hunter(1-3) gave a fine effort for Escanaba.  He allowed 4 hits
and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.  Hunter racked up 7 strikeouts and
gave up 2 homeruns.  Escanaba had only 6 hits for the night. 
 
Bruce Sutter was credited with his 6th save.  Tim Keefe(1-5) was hit
with the loss.  Wth the win Escanaba now has a record of 12-12.  With
the loss, the Buffalo ballclub's record is 12-12.
 
LAS VEGAS AT DES MOINES

Earl Averill launched 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Las Vegas Miners
outscored the Des Moines Pickers 11 to 8.
 
Averill enjoyed a great evening at the plate.  He delivered a solo
blast in the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd inning,
clubbed a two-run home run in the 5th inning and tripled in the 8th
inning.  Des Moines scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky
pitching kept them from victory.
 
Billy Pierce(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and
allowing no runs. Allie Reynolds recorded his 4th save.  Sparky Lyle
(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.  He got hit hard, allowing 5 hits
and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. 
 
Averill was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting
the ball real well now.  I made some adjustments last week and they are
paying off.  That's what this game is about. making adjustments as the
season goes along.'
 
CHEYENNE AT ORLANDO

The Cheyenne Gunslingers tallied 6 runs in the 7th inning and had very
little trouble at Ebbets Field downing the Orlando Wave.  The score was
10 to 5.
 
In the top of the 4th inning Cheyenne went on top for good plating an
isolated run utilizing 3 base hits.  Both teams totaled 14 hits on the
afternoon.
 
The winning pitcher was Jack Morris(1-2) who allowed 5 runs in 7 and
2/3 innings. Gaylord Perry(3-2) took the loss.  He was hit hard and
gave up 12 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. 
 
 
ANCHORAGE AT HONOLULU

Rafael Palmeiro blasted 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Shibe Park where
the Honolulu Islanders beat the Anchorage Gold 13 to 7.
 
Palmeiro enjoyed a great evening at the plate.  Every time he came up
in the latter innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering.  He
blasted a two-run home run in the 1st inning, lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run in the 4th inning and lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' in the 6th inning. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings,
Anchorage could not get the win.
 
The victory was credited to Hilton Smith(4-1) who went 7 innings,
allowing 7 runs. Jim Palmer(2-3) absorbed the loss.  Palmeiro was
jubilant after the game 'Let me see a box-score' he joked, 'I want to
see how that game looks on paper.'
 
MEMPHIS AT ALEXANDRIA

Will Clark touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Memphis Belles bested
the Alexandria Dukes 3 to 0 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Memphis tallied 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning.  The big moment
was provided by Clark who quieted the home crowd when he clubbed a two-
run home run.  Alexandria out-hit Memphis 10 to 7, but Memphis ended up
with more runs. 
 
The victory went to Tom Glavine(3-1) who went 7 and 2/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Glavine got help from Amos Rusie who earned his 2nd
save.  Don Sutton(0-4) was given the loss.  He was the victim of a
defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.
