Cristobal Torriente smashed 2 homeruns as the Des Moines Pickers bested
the Escanaba Yoopers 10 to 4 at Wrigley Field.
Torriente enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He doubled which scored
a run in the 3rd inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 5th inning,
doubled in the 7th inning and electrified the crowd with a Grand Slam
home run in the 8th inning. For the game Des Moines out-hit Escanaba
14 to 10.
Cy Young(1-6) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. The
losing pitcher was Don Drysdale(3-1). He allowed 11 hits and 2 walks
in 7 innings.
Torriente said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at
the plate tonight. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you
can. A couple pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my
zone.'

Roy Face delivered 4 solid innings and Tony Lazzeri had 4 hits and 3
RBI as the Cheyenne Gunslingers defeated the New Orleans Pelicans in
12 innings by the score of 9 to 7 at Fenway Park.
The score was tied at 7 after nine. Cheyenne was victorious in the 12th
inning. After an out was recorded, Jake Beckley got things rolling
when he doubled. Carew stole third and scored when the ball ended up
in the outfield. Lou Brock then laced a single. Pete Rose came up and
he bangedout a single. Del Crandall came up to bat and hit a sacrifice
fly. Cheyenne lit up the scoreboard in the 5th inning which saw them
score 4 runs on 4 hits. Cheyenne had 20 hits for the afternoon while
New Orleans had 12.
Rollie Fingers(2-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 and 1/3
innings and allowing 3 runs. Dan Quisenberry earned his 3rd save.
Robin Roberts(2-2) absorbed the loss in relief.
HONOLULU AT LAS VEGAS

46,617 fans were treated to a fine game at Yankee Stadium as only one
run separated the combatants at game's end. The Honolulu Islanders won
by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.
Hilton Smith(5-1) pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 5 and
1/3 innings allowing 4 hits and no walks and surrendered 2 homeruns.
Las Vegas threatened in the 9th but Honolulu was able to put down the
rally.
Leon Day recorded his 4th save. Ed Lopat(1-3) ended up with the loss.
He gave up 4 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of an inning. 'This was a tough
loss,' said Gene Mauch, 'the kind that sticks with you for awhile.'
MEMPHIS AT ORLANDO

Stan Musial had 2 base hits and Smokey Joe Williams threw a 3 hitter as
the Orlando Wave defeated the Memphis Belles by a score of 2 to 1 at
Ebbets Field.
In the 4th inning Orlando scored 1 run when they came up with 3 base
hits. That run would hold up as the winning run. After the 4th
inning, neither team was able to score.
Williams(2-2) allowed 1 run on the game. Stan Coveleski(1-5) was
charged with the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing 8 hits and 3
walks.
ANCHORAGE AT BUFFALO

Javy Lopez cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Tim Keefe completed the
game without help from the bullpen at Crosley Field where the Buffalo
Nickels beat the Anchorage Gold by the score of 6 to 2.
Lopez had a good evening at the plate. He bombed a two-run dinger in
the 2nd inning, slapped a base-hit in the 4th inning and popped a two-
run clout over the fence in the 6th inning. Buffalo managed 9 hits in
their victory.
Keefe(2-5) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Dennis
Martinez(3-2) suffered the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 innings
of work.
'It's been a rough ride lately, but this was a good win for us' said
Joe McCarthy, 'Maybe this will put us back on track.'
SASKATOON AT ALEXANDRIA

Don Sutton was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game and Tony Perez went deep and had 2 RBI at Tiger Stadium
as the Alexandria Dukes beat the Saskatoon Commodores 8 to 2.
Alexandria had 5 runs cross the plate in the 2nd inning when they had 5
base hits. That was all Sutton(1-4) needed. Alexandria had 8 hits for
the afternoon.
Jerry Koosman(2-3) was hit with the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 5 hits
in 1 and 2/3 innings.
