George Brett launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at The Astrodome where
the Saskatoon Commodores beat the Escanaba Yoopers by the score of
4 to 3.
 
Brett provided much of the offense.  He doubled in the 2nd inning,
ripped a solo home run in the 4th inning and cracked a two-run shot in
the 6th inning.  Saskatoon and Escanaba each finished the night with 9
hits. 
 
Jerry Koosman(2-1) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Hoyt Wilhelm preserved the game for Koosman, recording his his 6th. 
Catfish Hunter(0-3) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 9 hits and 3
walks in 8 innings. 
 
 
LAS VEGAS AT HONOLULU

Willie Mays ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Urban Shocker had an
impressive outing as the Honolulu Islanders staged a dramatic comeback
over the Las Vegas Miners by a score of 10 to 8 at Shibe Park.
 
Honolulu erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits.  The highlight belonged to
Paul Waner who electrified Shibe Park when he launched a Grand Slam
homerun.  Honolulu ended up with 11 hits for the game while Las Vegas
had 8. 
 
The win went to Leon Day(1-1) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning.
Allie Reynolds(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  Connie Mack was
ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought game like
that.  Our guys just weren't going to be denied.  And did you see the
fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this
afternoon!'
 
DES MOINES AT BUFFALO

Eppa Rixey tossed a complete game and first baseman Harmon Killebrew
had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Buffalo Nickels won a heart-stopping
victory over the Des Moines Pickers, 3 to 2.
 
The deciding run was scored by Buffalo in the 9th.  Pee Wee Reese drew
a walk. Billy Williams stepped into the batter's box and he doubled. 
Tom Henke then bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch.  Babe Ruth
followed next and he ripped a base-knock giving Buffalo the victory as
29,748 happy fans celebrated wildly.  Both teams finished the game with
10 hits. 
 
Rixey(3-0) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Henke(1-1)
ended up with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run in 2/3 of an
inning and saw his ERA increase from 4.15 to 4.82. 
 
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

The Anchorage Gold edged the Cheyenne Gunslingers at Metrodome by the
score of 4 to 3.
 
Anchorage scored the deciding run in the 8th inning.  After two outs
Ken Griffey Jr lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'.  Cheyenne had a chance
in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Dwight Gooden(1-2) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings.
Luis Tiant recorded his 4th save. Randy Johnson(2-1) suffered the loss.
He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7 and 2/3 innings of work. 
 
 
NEW ORLEANS AT ORLANDO

Kevin Brown retired 10 batters on strikeouts as the Orlando Wave
defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 6 to 2 at Ebbets Field.
 
Brown(1-3) earned his pay with a solid performance for Orlando.  He
surrendered 5 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings dropping his ERA
from 5.09 to 4.55.  Overall Orlando out-hit New Orleans 13 to 7. 
 
Brown got help from Burleigh Grimes who was credited with his 1st save.
The losing pitcher was Joe McGinnity(1-2).  He allowed 13 hits and 6
walks in 8 innings. 
 
Brown was pleased with his performance.  He noted, 'I had good zip on
my pitches.  Just as important, my location was right on.  The fans
really got into the game too - that always helps me.  Now, if I can
only do that again in my next outing.'
 
ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

Juan Marichal tossed a complete game and Roy Campanella lofted one into
the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI as the Alexandria Dukes bested the
Memphis Belles 7 to 2 at Polo Grounds.
 
Memphis was unable to recover after Alexandria went ahead in the 3rd
inning scoring a single run.  Alexandria won despite being out-hit by
Memphis 11 hits to 7. 
 
The victory was credited to Marichal(1-2) who went the distance,
allowing 2 runs. Amos Rusie(0-1) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 7 runs
and 7 hits in 9 innings.
