The Escanaba Yoopers and the Des Moines Pickers locked up in an
exciting one-run game at Wrigley Field.  The final score was the
Escanaba Yoopers 3, the Des Moines Pickers 2.
 
Babe Ruth(3-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Escanaba. 
He surrendered 6 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings improving his ERA from
4.23 to 3.97.  Escanaba rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon. 
 
Bruce Sutter was credited with his 7th save.  The losing pitcher was
Dennis Eckersley(0-1).  He served up 3 gopher balls in 7 innings. 
 
With the win Escanaba now has a record of 14-12.  Des Moines has a
record of 11-15, worst in the division after the loss.

Ferguson Jenkins completed the game without help from the bullpen as
the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers by a score of
8 to 3.
 
New Orleans scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning with the help
of 4 hits.  The key at-bat was by Ken Boyer who made the home-town
crowd a happy bunch when he popped a two-run clout over the fence.  New
Orleans had 11 hits for the night. 
 
The victory was credited to Jenkins(2-0) who went the distance,
allowing 3 runs. Vida Blue(2-4) was charged with the loss.  He was
unable to control the New Orleans offense and allowed 7 hits and 4
walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
HONOLULU AT LAS VEGAS

Bert Blyleven had an impressive outing as the Las Vegas Miners bested
the Honolulu Islanders 1 to 0 at Yankee Stadium.
 
Blyleven(4-2) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Honolulu
offense.  He gave up just 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings dropping his
ERA from 5.19 to 4.12.  Honolulu was set down quietly in the 9th. 
 
Greg Maddux(0-3) was hit with the loss.  He pitched 8 innings allowing
5 hits and 3 walks.
 
MEMPHIS AT ORLANDO

Mickey Welch went the distance and right fielder Sam Crawford had 2
base hits and 2 RBI as the Memphis Belles defeated the Orlando Wave by
the score of 7 to 3 at Ebbets Field.
 
Memphis won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 4 runners
on 4 hits.  The big moment was provided by Crawford who deflated the
mood of the partisan fans when he doubled bringing in two baserunners.
Memphis totaled 9 hits on the night. 
 
Welch(2-2) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. Rube
Foster(1-2) took the loss in relief.  He pitched 3 and 2/3 innings
giving up 1 hit and 1 walk.
 
 
ANCHORAGE AT BUFFALO

Dick Allen had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Crosley Field as the Anchorage
Gold pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Buffalo Nickels by the
count of 12 to 9.
 
Big Bill Foster(5-0) labored throughout the game but hung around to
record a victory.  He gave up 9 runs, 12 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3
innings and served up 2 'big flies'.  Anchorage managed 15 hits in
their victory. 
 
Luis Tiant earned his 5th save.  Carl Hubbell(4-2) was tagged with the
loss.  By giving up 8 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings his ERA increased from
5.02 to 6.21.
 
The Anchorage ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 15-10.
With the loss Buffalo now has a record of 12-14.
 
SASKATOON AT ALEXANDRIA

Christy Mathewson carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning at Tiger
Stadium as the Alexandria Dukes beat the Saskatoon Commodores by the
count of 6 to 2.
 
Mathewson(6-0) was solid in the win.  He allowed just 4 hits and 3
walks in 9 innings.  The right-handed Mathewson lost his no-hit bid
when Bobby Doerr tripled with one out in the 7th inning.  Alexandria
finished with 8 hits in the victory. 
 
Wilbur Cooper(4-1) suffered the loss.  He pitched 8 innings and
surrendered 8 hits and 5 walks.
