At Wrigley Field the Buffalo Nickels were battered 9 to 4 by the Des Moines
Pickers.
 
Buffalo was unable to recover after Des Moines went ahead in the bottom of the
2nd inning when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits.  The crucial at-bat was
provided by Arky Vaughan who made the crowd happy when he bombed a two-run
dinger.  Des Moines had 12 hits for the game and Buffalo had 7.  
 
Steve Carlton(1-0) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. David
Cone(0-1) ended up with the loss.  He was a hard-luck loser as he did not
allow an earned run in his 1 and 2/3 innings of work.  
 
 
ESCANABA AT SASKATOON

Second baseman Joe Morgan launched 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the
Saskatoon Commodores topped the Escanaba Yoopers by a score of 9 to 3 at The
Astrodome.
 
Morgan helped send the fans home happy.  He ripped a solo home run in the 1st
inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 8th inning.  Overall
Saskatoon out-hit Escanaba 13 to 6.  
 
The victory went to Roger Clemens(1-0) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2
runs. Early Wynn preserved the game for Clemens, recording his his 1st.
Catfish Hunter(0-1) absorbed the loss.  
 
 
HONOLULU AT LAS VEGAS

Reggie Jackson connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI at Yankee Stadium
where the Las Vegas Miners beat the Honolulu Islanders 5 to 3.
 
Las Vegas brought 2 runs across the plate in the 6th inning when they had 4
base hits.  Jackson got things going when he doubled.  Mike Schmidt was next
and he drew a walk.  Ed Delahanty then laced a one-base hit.  Delahanty got a
great jump and stole second easily.  Buck Ewing stepped into the box and
stroked a single.  After an out was recorded, Ryne Sandberg came to bat and
drew a walk.  Hughie Jennings stepped up next and he slapped a single to load
the bases.  Tris Speaker then grounded into a double play.  Las Vegas had 9
hits for the night.  
 
The win was credited to Tom Seaver(1-0) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3
runs. Allie Reynolds recorded his 1st save.  Chief Bender(0-1) was the loser.

Ferguson Jenkins struck out 11 batters as the New Orleans Pelicans defeated
the Orlando Wave 7 to 1 at Ebbets Field.
 
Jenkins(1-0) was solid in the win. He surrendered only 8 hits and no walks in
9 innings.  New Orleans finished with 9 hits in the victory.  
 
Vic Willis(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He surrendered 9 hits and 7 walks in
8 innings.  'Everything felt great' Jenkins said. 'I had a good fastball, I
felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.'
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

At Metrodome the Cheyenne Gunslingers easily handled the Anchorage Gold by the
score of 8 to 4.
 
Anchorage found themselves trailing quickly as the Cheyenne bats came through
in the first inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits.  Pete Rose led off and he
delivered a base-hit.  Wally Schang followed next and he drew a walk.  Jim
Bottomley followed, but he was set down on strikes.  Mickey Mantle was up
next and he drew a walk to load the bases.  Heinie Manush came up to bat and
lashed a single.  Cheyenne finished with 13 hits while Anchorage ended up
with 5.  
 
John Smoltz(1-0) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory.
Smoltz got relief help from Dan Quisenberry who gained credit for his 1st
save.  Dennis Martinez(0-1) was hit with the loss.  He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 12 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.  
 
 
ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

The Alexandria Dukes scored 5 runs in the 4th inning and had very little
trouble at Polo Grounds downing the Memphis Belles.  The score was 11 to
5.
 
Alexandria started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of
the first scoring one runner utilizing 2 base hits.  Ty Cobb doubled.  After
an out was recorded, Hank Greenberg came to the plate and took charge
himself, delivering a solo home run.  For the game Alexandria out-hit Memphis
15 to 11.  
 
Candy Cummings(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Stan
Coveleski(0-1) was charged with the loss.  Alexandria knocked him around a
bit, as he gave up 8 runs in 3 innings.
