Carl Hubbell was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game at Yankee Stadium where the Buffalo Nickels beat the Las
Vegas Miners 7 to 3.
 
Hubbell(2-0) gave a fine effort for Buffalo.  He went 9 innings
surrendering 8 hits and 1 walk and allowed 2 gopher balls.  Despite
losing, Las Vegas out-hit Buffalo 8 to 5. 
 
The losing pitcher was Ed Lopat(0-2).  Buffalo scored big getting 6
runs off him in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Shortstop Ernie Banks slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Orlando
Wave defeated the Honolulu Islanders in 11 innings by a score of 4 to 2
at Shibe Park.
 
Both teams had scored 2 runs after nine full innings.  Orlando won it
in the 11th inning.  Oscar Charleston led off and got things going when
he drew a walk.  Charleston was safe on a stolen base.  After an out
was recorded, Banks came to the plate and cracked a two-run shot. 
Stan Musial came up and he lined a base-hit.  Eddie Murray got his turn
next, but he was a strikeout victim.  Andre Dawson struck out, unable
to help the rally.  Orlando finished with just 6 hits in the victory. 
 
Gaylord Perry(1-1) got the win allowing 2 runs in 10 innings. Waite
Hoyt got the save, his 1st.  Red Faber(0-1) was given the loss in
relief.  He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in 3 and 1/3 innings. 
 
 
SASKATOON AT NEW ORLEANS

Jerry Koosman reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts and Edgar Martinez
cracked 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI at Fenway Park as the Saskatoon
Commodores, running on all cylinders, ripped the New Orleans Pelicans
by a large 13 to 3 margin.
 
Martinez enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run in the 2nd inning, stroked a single
bringing in two baserunners in the 3rd inning, laced a one-base hit in
the 5th inning, clubbed a three-run home run in the 6th inning and
slapped a base-hit in the 8th inning.  Saskatoon rapped out 18 hits for
the night. 
 
Koosman(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. Joe
McGinnity(1-1) was tagged with the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 12
hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. 
 
Koosman was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a
little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of
cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still
and quiet.  Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd
out of the game.'
 
ANCHORAGE AT DES MOINES

Nolan Ryan dominated striking out 13 Anchorage batters and first
baseman Roger Connor had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Des Moines
Pickers topped the Anchorage Gold by a score of 4 to 3 at Wrigley
Field.
 
Ryan(1-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Des Moines. 
He allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA to
2.70.  Anchorage tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 
 
Sparky Lyle recorded his 1st save.  Dwight Gooden(0-2) was the losing
pitcher. He was touched for 11 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. 
 
When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Ryan offered, 'The
fan's really got into it.  It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout
totals up there in the stands.  Fortunately, I kept them busy tonight
- of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'
 
MEMPHIS AT CHEYENNE

Robin Yount had 2 base hits and Randy Johnson was on top of his game,
blanking Memphis on just 3 hits at Forbes Field as the Cheyenne
Gunslingers beat the Memphis Belles 5 to 0.
 
Johnson(2-0) was simply too much for the Memphis batters.  He
surrendered only 3 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  Johnson chalked up
15 strikeouts lowering his ERA from 3.86 to 1.69.  Cheyenne finished
with 7 hits in the victory.
 
Tom Glavine(1-1) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in
6 and 2/3 innings.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Johnson
- except Memphis.  Bill McKechnie lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight.
He was keeping our guys off balance all game.  A fine game by a good
strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans -
unfortunately we were the visitors!'
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ESCANABA

Willie McCovey rocketed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Baker Bowl as the
Escanaba Yoopers staged a comeback win over the Alexandria Dukes by
the count of 10 to 9.
 
Escanaba erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning plating
2 runs on 2 base hits.  McCovey led off the inning for Escanaba when he
lined a single.  Larry Doby came next and he smashed a two-run homer
giving Escanaba the win as 19,914 happy fans joyfully celebrated. 
Although they lost, Alexandria did out-hit Escanaba 16 to 11. 
 
The victory went to Bruce Sutter(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing 4
runs. Tug McGraw(1-1) was hit with the loss in relief.  He surrendered
2 hits and no walks without retiring a batter. 
 
'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made
some adjustments,' McCovey said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are
getting you out certain ways, you've got to make changes.'
