22,596 fans were treated to a fine game at Polo Grounds as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Escanaba Yoopers won by
the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
 
Escanaba took the lead for good in the 2nd inning plating an isolated
run on 2 hits.  Babe Ruth(4-1) was helped out by Bruce Sutter who
pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 8th save. 
 
Three Finger Brown(0-4) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed 3
homeruns in 8 and 1/3 innings of work.  'I always am most impressed
when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Tommy
Lasorda said after the game. 'Ruth did not have command of his pitches
most of the night, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'
 
ANCHORAGE AT ORLANDO

Rube Waddell allowed Casey Stengal to rest his bullpen, tossing a
complete game and catcher Biz Mackey had 4 hits as the Orlando Wave
topped the Anchorage Gold by a score of 8 to 1 at Ebbets Field.
 
Waddell(2-1) gave Orlando a solid outing.  He allowed just 6 hits and
4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.92.  Orlando banged out 14
hits on the night. 
 
Ed Walsh(3-1) absorbed the loss.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11
hits and 5 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
 
DES MOINES AT SASKATOON

First baseman George Sisler had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Saskatoon
Commodores defeated the Des Moines Pickers 11 to 4 at The Astrodome.
 
Wilbur Cooper(5-1) pitched well for Saskatoon in their victory.  He was
reached for 9 hits and 7 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings reducing his ERA
from 4.70 to 4.47.  The Saskatoon offense man-handled the Des Moines
pitching staff as they scored in 7 of the 9 innings. 
 
Nolan Ryan(4-2) took the loss.  He was touched for 14 hits and 5 walks
in 6 and 1/3 innings.
 
HONOLULU AT CHEYENNE

Robin Yount hit 2 doubles as the Cheyenne Gunslingers defeated the
Honolulu Islanders in 11 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at Forbes Field.
 
The score was tied at 4 after nine.  Finally, Cheyenne pulled the game
out in the 11th inning.  Jake Beckley drew a walk.  Lou Brock came next
and he drew a walk.  After an out was recorded, Brock got a good lead
and stole second. Wally Schang came up and he lashed a single resulting
in a mighty exciting win for Cheyenne and the 25,918 home town fans in
attendance.  Both teams ended up with 9 hits on the night. 
 
Dan Quisenberry(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 4 and 2/3
innings. Red Faber(2-2) was the loser in relief.  He pitched 2 and 2/3
innings and surrendered no hits and 3 walks.

In a tight game it was the Alexandria Dukes 4, the New Orleans Pelicans
2 at Tiger Stadium.
 
Alexandria did all the necessary damage in the 8th inning as they
scored 4 runs on 2 base hits.  Neither team was able to score until the
8th inning.
 
The victory was credited to Kent Tekulve(1-0) who went 1 inning,
allowing no runs. Goose Gossage gained credit for his 4th save.  Joe
McGinnity(1-3) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 5 hits in
7 innings.
