Joe Gordon connected with a 'big fly' at Shibe Park as the Honolulu
Islanders beat the Las Vegas Miners by the count of 6 to 4.
 
Honolulu had 3 runs cross the plate in the 7th inning when they had 5
base hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Travis Jackson who made
the crowd happy when he doubled bringing home two baserunners.  The
score went back-and-forth with the lead changing 5 times. 
 
Warren Spahn(2-1) allowed 4 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings, and picked up
the victory. Spahn got help from Chief Bender who earned his 1st save.
Bullet Joe Rogan(0-2) ended up with the loss.  He was hit hard and gave
up 13 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. 
 
'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Spahn said.

Duke Snider had 2 base hits as the Escanaba Yoopers topped the
Saskatoon Commodores by a score of 6 to 3 at The Astrodome.
 
Bob Gibson(2-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Escanaba. 
He went 6 innings and surrended up 6 hits and 1 walk lowering his ERA
to 3.10.  Escanaba had 11 hits for the night while Saskatoon had 7. 
 
Bruce Sutter earned his 4th save.  Jim Bunning(0-3) was hit with the
loss.  Wth the win Escanaba now has a record of 6-6.  With the loss,
the Saskatoon ballclub's record is 7-5.
 
BUFFALO AT DES MOINES

Eppa Rixey(2-0) and Lefty Grove(0-2) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Rixey and the Buffalo Nickels coming out on top of the Des Moines
Pickers 4 to 0.
 
Buffalo came up with all the runs they needed in the 2nd inning scoring
4 runners on 3 hits.  That early run support was all that Rixey
required.  Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 2nd inning with no
runs scored after that point. 
 
Jack Chesbro was credited with his 1st save.
 
MEMPHIS AT NEW ORLEANS

The Memphis Belles broke out of their 7 game losing streak and readily
handled New Orleans Pelicans by a score of 5 to 1 at Fenway Park.
 
Memphis scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning when
they scored 4 runs on 2 hits.  New Orleans out-hit Memphis 10 to 7, but
Memphis ended up with more runs. 
 
The winning pitcher was Eddie Plank(1-2) who allowed 1 run in 8 and 2/3
innings. Plank got relief help from Phil Niekro who gained credit for
his 1st save.  Babe Adams(2-1) took the loss.  He gave up 4 runs and 6
hits in 8 and 1/3 innings. 
 
Bill McKechnie was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad
streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back.  Now
maybe we can relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we
are capable.'
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

Shortstop Robin Yount jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI at
Metrodome as the Cheyenne Gunslingers beat the Anchorage Gold in 12
innings 4 to 3.
 
The score was tied at 3 after nine.  Cheyenne won the game in the 12th
inning.  After an out was recorded, Lou Brock laced a base-knock. 
Brock was safe at second on a stolen base.  Cheyenne continued their
aggressive style with another stolen base.  Kid Nichols then unleashed
a wild pitch.  Cheyenne and Anchorage each finished the night with 7
hits. 
 
Rollie Fingers(1-1) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 4 innings. Whitey
Ford gained credit for his 1st save.  Nichols(1-1) was charged with the
loss in relief.  He saw his ERA jump from 4.91 to 5.79 as gave up 1 run
in 1 inning.
 
The Cheyenne ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 8-4. 
With the loss Anchorage now has a record of 8-4.
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Sandy Koufax held Orlando to 2 hits as the Alexandria Dukes defeated
the Orlando Wave by the score of 4 to 1 at Ebbets Field.
 
Alexandria brought 2 runs across the plate in the 5th inning when they
came up with 4 base hits.  It was enough to earn the victory. 
Alexandria banged out 10 hits on the night. 
 
Koufax(3-0) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Kevin Brown
(0-3) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed 4 runs and 10 hits in 8
innings.
