Center fielder Dave Winfield jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2
RBI as the Escanaba Yoopers beat the Saskatoon Commodores in 12 innings
by a score of 7 to 5.
The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Escanaba came
out the victor in the 12th inning. After two outs Luis Aparicio got
things going when he drew a walk. Martin Dihigo stepped into the
batter's box and he cracked a two-run shot. Johnny Bench followed,
but he was set down on strikes. Escanaba managed 13 hits in their
victory.
Bruce Sutter(2-0) went 4 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Sutter
was helped out by Dizzy Dean who recorded his 1st save. Jack Quinn
(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.

50,111 fans watched an exciting game at Shibe Park. The Las Vegas
Miners topped the Honolulu Islanders by the slimmest of margins,
5 to 4.
Both teams had scored 4 runs after nine full innings. Las Vegas won
the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded,
Richie Ashburn lashed a single. After another out, Lou Gehrig came to
bat and doubled. Las Vegas finished with 12 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Bert Blyleven(2-2) who went 9 innings allowing
4 runs. Blyleven got help from Allie Reynolds who was credited with
his 2nd save. Leon Day(1-2) suffered the loss in relief. His ERA
increased from 2.31 to 4.15 as he allowed 3 runs in 1 and 1/3 innings.
DES MOINES AT BUFFALO

Third baseman Jackie Robinson left the yard and had 3 RBI at Crosley
Field where the Des Moines Pickers beat the Buffalo Nickels 14 to 13.
Robinson enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He delivered a solo blast
in the 3rd inning, smacked a single in the 4th inning and doubled
bringing home two baserunners in the 5th inning. Buffalo made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs
across.
Lefty Grove(1-2) went 6 innings allowing 10 runs for the win. Sparky
Lyle recorded the save, his 4th. Carl Hubbell(3-1) was the loser.
He got hit pretty hard, allowing 14 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.
Bobby Cox was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If
only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since
that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little
while.'
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

Gabby Hartnett ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Big Bill Foster was
able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game
as the Anchorage Gold defeated the Cheyenne Gunslingers by the score
of 8 to 3 at Metrodome.
Hartnett had a big evening at the plate. He smashed a solo-shot out
of the park in the 6th inning and blasted a two-run home run in the
8th inning. Anchorage had a total of 8 hits for the game.
Foster(4-0) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. The
losing pitcher was Vida Blue(1-3). By surrending 8 runs in 7 and 2/3
innings his ERA jumped from 5.53 to 6.37.
With this win, Anchorage has a division leading 12-6 record. They
have been 6-4 lately. Cheyenne has a record of 10-8 after the loss.

Willie Stargell had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the New Orleans Pelicans
defeated the Orlando Wave by a score of 5 to 3 at Ebbets Field.
New Orleans came up with 2 runs in the 4th inning when they had 3 base
hits. Jeff Bagwell led off and he doubled. Dale Murphy stepped up
next and he laced a one-base hit. Murphy took second on the throw.
Joe Torre struck out, unable to help the rally. One out later, Frankie
Frisch came to the plate and laced a base-hit. New Orleans rapped out
10 hits for the night.
Pud Galvin(4-0) got the win allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Robin Roberts
gained credit for his 1st save. Vic Willis(1-2) was given the loss.
ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

Sandy Koufax dominated striking out 10 Memphis batters as the
Alexandria Dukes bested the Memphis Belles 6 to 5 at Polo Grounds.
Koufax(4-0) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't
allow much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Alexandria had a
total of 11 hits for the game.
Eddie Plank(1-3) was tagged with the loss. He was touched for 11 hits
and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Koufax didn't realize how many
strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had 10 he was obviously
surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I
didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good, isn't it?'
