Pete Alexander allowed only 3 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the
scoreboard for Saskatoon and Ed Delahanty had 4 hits and 2 RBI at
Yankee Stadium where the Las Vegas Miners beat the Saskatoon Commodores
by the score of 9 to 0.
 
Alexander(3-1) was tremendous on the mound for Las Vegas.  He didn't
give up much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings dropping his ERA
from 4.40 to 3.40. Las Vegas had 12 hits for the afternoon. 
 
Jerry Koosman(2-2) was the losing pitcher.  Walt Alston was obviously
impressed with the pitching of Alexander, 'That guy made us look a
little silly out there this afternoon.  We just couldn't get to him at
all - everything was working for him.  I just hope that he got that
kinda performance out of his system.'
 
BUFFALO AT ORLANDO

Carl Hubbell pitched a complete game at Ebbets Field where the Buffalo
Nickels beat the Orlando Wave 5 to 2.
 
Rogers Hornsby was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he
enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense.  He ripped a single in the
1st inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 8th inning and doubled
bringing home two baserunners in the 9th inning.  Orlando was set down
quietly in the bottom of the 9th. 
 
Hubbell(4-1) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Kevin
Brown(1-4) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed 2 hits and no walks in
1 and 2/3 innings. 
 
Wth the win Buffalo now has a record of 11-10.  With the loss, Orlando
has a record of 5-5 lately, 10-11 overall.
 
HONOLULU AT ESCANABA

Third baseman Home Run Baker smacked 2 homeruns as the Escanaba Yoopers
clobbered the outmatched Honolulu Islanders, 15 to 4.
 
It seemed that Honolulu pitching was serving up softballs for Baker to
hit. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 2nd inning, hit a
'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates in the 3rd inning and
delivered a single which scored a run in the 8th inning.  Escanaba kept
the scorekeepers busy in the 3rd inning when they had 7 runs on 7 hits.
Escanaba simply wore out the Honolulu pitching staff, scoring in 6
different innings. 
 
The win was credited to Don Drysdale(2-0) who went 8 and 2/3 innings
allowing 4 runs. Hilton Smith(3-1) suffered the loss.  He surrended 3
homeruns in his 2 innings. 
 
'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made
some adjustments,' Baker said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are
getting you out certain ways, you've got to make changes.'
 
DES MOINES AT NEW ORLEANS

Nolan Ryan racked up an impressive total of 13 strikeouts as the Des
Moines Pickers defeated the New Orleans Pelicans by the score of 11
to 3 at Fenway Park.
 
Ted Williams had a good day at the plate.  He doubled scoring two
baserunners in the 6th inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 9th
inning.  Des Moines managed 12 hits in their victory. 
 
The win went to Ryan(3-1) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Satchel
Paige(3-2) was hit with the loss.  'Everything felt great' Ryan said.
'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody today.'
 
MEMPHIS AT ANCHORAGE

Frank Thomas launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Metrodome as the
Anchorage Gold beat the Memphis Belles 8 to 4.
 
The Anchorage fans enjoyed the offense provided by Thomas.  He cracked
a two-run shot in the 3rd inning, laced a base-hit in the 6th inning
and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 7th inning.  Memphis
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. 
 
The victory went to Dennis Martinez(3-1) who went 8 innings, allowing 3
runs.  Stan Coveleski(1-3) was given the loss.  He allowed a few too
many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. 
 
Leo Durocher was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If
only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since
that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little
while.'

The Alexandria Dukes nipped the Cheyenne Gunslingers 3 to 2 at Forbes
Field in a hard fought contest.
 
Candy Cummings(2-1) pitched a solid game.  He allowed 8 hits and 1
walk in 8 innings.  Both teams totaled 8 hits on the afternoon. 
 
Cummings was helped out by Goose Gossage who recorded his 2nd save. 
Whitey Ford(2-1) ended up with the loss.  He pitched 9 innings allowing
8 hits and 5 walks.
