Hilton Smith tossed a complete game at Shibe Park where the Honolulu
Islanders beat the Las Vegas Miners 4 to 3.
 
Honolulu won the game with a run in the 8th inning.  After an out was
recorded, Al Simmons doubled.  After another out, Hugh Duffy came to
bat and stroked a base-hit.  Paul Waner was next to the plate, but was
promptly struck out.  Las Vegas proved to be no trouble in the 9th. 
 
The winning pitcher was Smith(2-0) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Tom
Seaver(1-1) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 8 hits and 2 walks.
 
ESCANABA AT SASKATOON

In a close game the Escanaba Yoopers got by the Saskatoon Commodores by
the score of 5 to 3.
 
Ray Brown(2-0) pitched well for Escanaba in their victory. He allowed
4 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.  For the game Escanaba
out-hit Saskatoon 9 to 5. 
 
Bruce Sutter got the save, his 3rd.  Walter Johnson(1-2) suffered the
loss.  He surrendered 1 run and 3 hits in 3 and 1/3 innings.
 
BUFFALO AT DES MOINES

Steve Carlton hurled a 3 hitter and Al Kaline touched them all and had
3 RBI at Wrigley Field where the Des Moines Pickers beat the Buffalo
Nickels by the score of 7 to 1.
 
Des Moines drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first
inning scoring 2 runs.  After an out was recorded, Roger Connor began
the rally when he drew a walk.  Kaline came next and he blasted a
two-run home run.  That was all the offense they were to need.  Des
Moines managed 8 hits in their victory. 
 
Carlton(2-0) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Tim
Keefe(0-3) ended up with the loss.  Des Moines scored big getting
7 runs off him in 6 and 2/3 innings. 
 
The Des Moines fans were thrilled by the performance put forth by
Carlton, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most.
'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation
with a loud cheer.' Bobby Cox said following the game.
 
MEMPHIS AT NEW ORLEANS

Sammy Sosa ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Satchel Paige dominated
striking out 11 Memphis batters at Fenway Park as the New Orleans
Pelicans beat the slumping Memphis Belles 8 to 4.
 
Sosa enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He clubbed a two-run home run
in the 1st inning and delivered a solo blast in the 7th inning.  New
Orleans banged out 10 hits on the night. 
 
The win went to Paige(3-0) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Jimmy Key
(0-1) was hit with the loss.  He surrended 4 homeruns in his 6
innings. 
 
Bucky Harris was asked about the performance of Paige, 'He had his
good stuff out there tonight.  The fans really get into it when the
strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more
adrenalin.'
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

Dennis Martinez pitched a complete game as the Anchorage Gold outscored
the Cheyenne Gunslingers 6 to 2.
 
Cheyenne found themselves trailing quickly as the Anchorage bats came
through in the first inning when they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits.  That
early scoring was all that Martinez(1-1) needed.  Anchorage finished
with 9 hits in the victory. 
 
Mickey Lolich(0-2) was tagged with the loss.  He gave up 8 hits and 4
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Carl Yastrzemski went yard and Rube Waddell was able to finish what he
started and was credited with a complete game as the Orlando Wave
defeated the Alexandria Dukes by the score of 3 to 2 at Ebbets Field.
 
Orlando scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Yastrzemski
led off and started the rally when he doubled.  Ray Schalk was a
strikeout victim, unable to help out.  Larry Walker then cracked a
two-run shot.  Orlando rapped out 7 hits for the night. 
 
Waddell(1-0), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Juan
Marichal(0-2) was given the loss.  He allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in 8
innings.
