Roger Clemens tossed a complete game shutout at The Astrodome as the
Saskatoon Commodores beat the Escanaba Yoopers 6 to 0.
 
Clemens(2-1) contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He was stingy on
the mound, allowing just 8 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings seeing his ERA
drop from 4.73 to 2.82.  The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as
neither team was able to score again. 
 
Ray Brown(2-2) took the loss.  It was a tough loss for him as he did
not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work. 
 
The Saskatoon ballclub's record now stands at 10-9.  With the loss,
Escanaba has a record of 5-5 lately, 9-10 overall.
 
LAS VEGAS AT HONOLULU

Tom Seaver reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts as the Las Vegas Miners
outscored the Honolulu Islanders 3 to 0.
 
Seaver(2-1) was simply too much for the Honolulu batters.  He allowed
only 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.60 to
2.25.  Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning. 
 
Warren Spahn(2-2) was charged with the loss.  He allowed 3 runs and 6
hits in 7 innings.  'I thought it was my best performance in a long
time,' said Seaver. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my
control and composure and everything went well.'
 
DES MOINES AT BUFFALO

The Buffalo Nickels defeated the Des Moines Pickers by a score of 11
to 7 at Crosley Field.
 
Buffalo had 8 runs cross the plate in the 4th inning with the help of
6 hits.  The big moment was provided by Mark McGwire who brought a roar
from the partisan Crosley Field fans when he electrified the crowd with
a Grand Slam home run.  Buffalo ended up with 16 hits for the game
while Des Moines had 8.
 
David Cone(1-2) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 6 runs for the victory.
Cone got help from Lon Warneke who was credited with his 1st save. 
Cy Young(0-5) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 7 runs in 3 and 2/3
innings of work. 
 
 
CHEYENNE AT ANCHORAGE

Jim Bottomley had 4 hits as the Cheyenne Gunslingers rallied
impressively to win in dramatic style over Anchorage Gold, 9 to 7.
 
Cheyenne had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring
5 runners on 5 hits.  The highlight belonged to Rod Carew who
disappointed the partisan crowd when he tripled plating two runs. 
Cheyenne lit up the scoreboard in the 9th inning which saw them score
5 runs on 5 hits.  The game was a wild affair with the lead changing
hands 6 times. 
 
Whitey Ford(2-0) got the win allowing 3 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.
Rollie Fingers got the save, his 5th.  Luis Tiant(0-1) was the loser
in relief.
 
Tiant was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one
get away.  What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans.
One minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just
hope I get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

Gaylord Perry went the distance at Ebbets Field as the New Orleans
Pelicans lost a heartbreaker to Orlando Wave by the score of 4 to 3.
 
The game was won by Orlando with a run in the 9th inning.  Carl
Yastrzemski doubled.  After an out was recorded, Larry Walker stepped
up to the plate and he delivered a single making Orlando victorious to
the delight of the the home town crowd.  Orlando managed 9 hits in
their victory. 
 
Perry(3-1) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Babe
Adams(2-2) absorbed the loss.  He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings giving up
9 hits and 3 walks.
 
Wth the win Orlando now has a record of 9-10.  With the loss, the New
Orleans ballclub's record is 13-6.
 
ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

Mickey Welch held Alexandria scoreless on just 3 hits as the Memphis
Belles defeated the Alexandria Dukes by a score of 1 to 0 at Polo
Grounds.
 
Welch(1-2) was in control of the game from the outset.  He allowed just
3 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.86 to 2.86. 
Memphis had just 6 hits for the night. 
 
Don Sutton(0-3) was tagged with the loss.  He surrendered just 6 hits
and no walks in 8 innings.
