Earl Averill launched 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Las Vegas Miners
outscored the Des Moines Pickers 11 to 8.
Averill enjoyed a great evening at the plate. He delivered a solo blast in
the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd inning, clubbed a two-run
home run in the 5th inning and tripled in the 8th inning. Des Moines scored
in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept them from victory.
Billy Pierce(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Allie Reynolds recorded his 4th save. Sparky Lyle(0-1) suffered the
loss in relief. He got hit hard, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3
innings.
Averill was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the
ball real well now. I made some adjustments last week and they are paying
off. That's what this game is about. making adjustments as the season goes
along.'
