Charlie Gehringer had 3 base hits as the Escanaba Yoopers topped the
Memphis Belles in 11 innings by a score of 6 to 5 at Polo Grounds.
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally,
Escanaba pulled the game out in the 11th inning. Dwight Evans lined a
single. Tony Fernandez was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.
After another out, Lloyd Waner came to the plate and laced a base-
knock. Gehringer stepped in and he drew a walk. Although they lost,
Memphis did out-hit Escanaba 13 to 10.
Dizzy Dean(1-0) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the win.
Jesse Haines(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 2 and
1/3 innings and surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk.

Shortstop Dave Bancroft had 2 base hits and Gaylord Perry tossed a
complete game shutout as the Orlando Wave defeated the Anchorage Gold
by the score of 5 to 0 at Ebbets Field.
Perry(4-2) looked very much in control throughout the night. He allowed
only 6 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.93 to 4.06. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.
Big Bill Foster(5-1) absorbed the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 11 hits
in 8 innings.

Steve Carlton allowed Bobby Cox to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game as the Des Moines Pickers bested the Saskatoon Commodores 6 to 2
at The Astrodome.
In the 6th inning Des Moines scored 4 runs when they came up with 3
base hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Both teams ended up
with 6 hits on the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Carlton(3-0) who went the distance,
allowing 2 runs. The loss was charged to Walter Johnson(2-3).

Mickey Mantle had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Cheyenne Gunslingers
defeated the Honolulu Islanders by a score of 4 to 3 at Forbes Field.
Honolulu surrendered all of the runs Cheyenne needed in the 5th inning
when they came up with 4 runs on 4 hits. The critical plate appearance
was by Pete Rose who came through for the home fans when he smacked a
single bringing in two baserunners. Randy Johnson(3-3) was helped out
by Rollie Fingers who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 7th save.
Warren Spahn(2-4) was the loser. He surrendered 4 runs and 6 hits in 8
innings.
NEW ORLEANS AT ALEXANDRIA

Wee Willie Keeler had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Christy Mathewson was able
to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at
Tiger Stadium as the Alexandria Dukes beat the New Orleans Pelicans by
the count of 9 to 3.
New Orleans never recovered after Alexandria took the lead in the
bottom of the 7th inning with 2 runs on 4 base hits. Honus Wagner led
off and keyed the rally when he tripled. Ferguson Jenkins then threw a
pitch that the catcher muffed. Eddie Collins then stroked a base-hit.
After an out was recorded, Ty Cobb stepped up to the plate and he
doubled. Keeler stepped into the box and drew a walk. Hank Greenberg
kept the rally going and lashed a single. Roy Campanella got his turn
next, but he was a strikeout victim. Alexandria finished with 13 hits
in the victory.
Mathewson(7-0), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory.
Jenkins(2-1) was given the loss. He was touched for 12 hits and 5
walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.
