In a one-sided affiar at Metrodome the final score was the Las Vegas
Miners 8, the Anchorage Gold 2.
 
Ed Lopat(1-2) gave Las Vegas a solid outing.  He went 7 and 2/3 innings
and surrended up 3 hits and 2 walks.  Las Vegas had 12 hits for the
game and Anchorage had 6. 
 
Jim Palmer(2-1) was the loser.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11
hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
 
BUFFALO AT SASKATOON

Addie Joss had a strong outing at The Astrodome where the Buffalo
Nickels beat the Saskatoon Commodores by the score of 6 to 3.
 
Buffalo had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs
using 2 hits.  Tim Raines led off and keyed the rally when he ripped a
single.  Orlando Cepeda came to the plate and drew a walk.  After an
out was recorded, Pee Wee Reese stepped in and he drew a walk to load
the bases.  Red Schoendienst was up next and he hit a deep fly.  Babe
Ruth stepped into the box and doubled.  Mark McGwire continued the
rally and was walked intentionally.  The Saskatoon bats were silent
in the bottom of the 9th.
 
Joss(1-2) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. Roger Clemens
(1-1) was tagged with the loss.  Despite the loss, he struckout 12
Buffalo batters in 8 innings.

John McGraw had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Des Moines Pickers bested
the Escanaba Yoopers 7 to 5 at Wrigley Field.
 
Nolan Ryan(2-1) pitched okay, well enough for the win.  He went 7
innings surrendering 8 hits and 6 walks.  Escanaba had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Sparky Lyle recorded the save, his 2nd.  Ray Brown(2-1) ended up with
the loss.  He gave up 7 runs and 10 hits in 8 innings. 
 
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even
without his best stuff,' Bobby Cox said after the game.  'Ryan did not
have command of his pitches most of the night, but he proved he really
knew how to pitch!'
 
ORLANDO AT MEMPHIS

In a dramatic ending, the Memphis Belles staged a comeback win over the
Orlando Wave by the count of 7 to 6.
 
Memphis came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning
scoring 5 runners on 4 hits.  The highlight belonged to Craig Biggio
who thrilled the crowd when he belted a three-run homer.  Memphis
managed 10 hits in their victory. 
 
The winning pitcher was Martin Dihigo(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 3
and 1/3 innings. Waite Hoyt(0-1) was given the loss in relief.  'What
a game!,' Dihigo said afterward.  'When we won it I almost couldn't
believe it!'
 
CHEYENNE AT HONOLULU

Chick Hafey had 3 base hits at Shibe Park where the Cheyenne
Gunslingers beat the Honolulu Islanders 4 to 2.
 
Cheyenne scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning when they came up
with 4 base hits.  They ended up being the winning runs.  Mickey Lolich
(1-2) got help from Rollie Fingers who pitched a perfect ninth and was
credited with his 4th save. 
 
Mike Mussina(0-1) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in
5 and 1/3 innings.
 
NEW ORLEANS AT ALEXANDRIA

Carl Mays allowed Bucky Harris to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game and third baseman Ken Boyer blasted a homerun and had 4 RBI as the
New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Alexandria Dukes 9 to 4 at Tiger
Stadium.
 
Boyer had a big day with his bat.  He doubled which plated a run in the
2nd inning and rifled a three-run blast in the 7th inning.  New Orleans
had 17 hits for the night. 
 
Mays(1-1), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The
losing pitcher was Candy Cummings(1-1).  He was not very effective,
surrendering 6 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. 
 
New Orleans now has a record of a division leading 12-3.  With the
loss Alexandria now has a record of 8-7.
