Johnny Bench had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Escanaba Yoopers defeated the
Buffalo Nickels by a score of 15 to 7 at Baker Bowl.
 
Bench provided much of the offense.  He smacked a single in the 3rd
inning, clubbed a two-run home run in the 5th inning, doubled which
plated a run in the 6th inning and doubled scoring a run in the 8th
inning.  Escanaba bats were very productive in the 1st inning plating
5 runs and the 5th inning when they had 5 runs on 5 hits.  Escanaba
dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings. 
 
Don Drysdale(3-0) was the winner allowing 7 runs in 8 innings. David
Cone(1-3) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 2/3
of an inning.

Nolan Ryan retired 11 batters on strikeouts at Wrigley Field as the Des
Moines Pickers beat the Las Vegas Miners by the count of 12 to 5.
 
Ryan(4-1) delivered a fine performance for Des Moines.  He went 7 and
2/3 innings and surrended up 6 hits and 5 walks.  Des Moines had 18
hits overall, while Las Vegas had 9. 
 
Pete Alexander(3-2) was tagged with the loss.  He was not very
effective, surrendering 5 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.  Gene Mauch was
upset after the game.  'I don't like to complain but did you see that
umpires strike zone?', he said.  'Maybe they ought to start calling
the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
 
CHEYENNE AT ORLANDO

Jud Wilson homered and had 2 RBI and Whitey Ford pitched 8 strong
innings at Ebbets Field as the Cheyenne Gunslingers came back
dramatically to top the Orlando Wave by the score of 5 to 2.
 
Cheyenne scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning
scoring 5 runners on 5 hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Wilson
who deflated the crowd as he cleared the fences for a two-run home run.
Cheyenne finished with 12 hits while Orlando ended up with 5. 
 
The victory was credited to Ford(3-1) who went 8 innings, allowing 2
runs.  Rollie Fingers earned his 6th save.  Waite Hoyt(0-2) took the
loss in relief.
 
'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Wilson said. 'If
you just keep trying good things can happen!'

17,004 fans were treated to a fine game at Tiger Stadium as only one
run separated the combatants at game's end.  The Alexandria Dukes won
by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
 
Tug McGraw(2-1) was the winning pitcher with a solid relief
performance.  He surrendered only 2 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3
innings and racked up 7 strikeouts reducing his ERA from 6.00 to 2.35.
The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was able
to score again. 
 
McGraw got relief help from Goose Gossage who gained credit for his
3rd save.  Stan Coveleski(1-4) suffered the loss.  He pitched 7 and 1/3
innings and surrendered 8 hits and 5 walks.
 
Wth the win Alexandria now has a record of 15-10.  Memphis has a record
of 8-17, worst in the division after the loss.
