Tris Speaker collected 2 extra-base hits and had 4 RBI and Bert
Blyleven struck out 11 batters as the Las Vegas Miners defeated the
Buffalo Nickels by a score of 8 to 2 at Yankee Stadium.
 
It was a good day for Las Vegas thanks to Speaker.  He singled in the
1st inning, doubled which plated a run in the 4th inning and tripled
with all three baserunners touching home in the 5th inning.  Las Vegas
banged out 9 hits on the afternoon. 
 
Blyleven(1-1) allowed 2 runs on the game. Addie Joss(0-2) was hit with
the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 6 walks in 4 and 2/3
innings.
 
'Everything felt great' Blyleven said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt
I could throw it by everybody today.'

The Orlando Wave edged the Honolulu Islanders in 17 innings at Shibe
Park by the score of 4 to 3.
 
Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings.  Finally,
Orlando pulled the game out in the 17th inning.  After an out was
recorded, Elmer Flick doubled.  One out later, Dave Bancroft came up
and he tripled.  Orlando won despite being out-hit by Honolulu 14 hits
to 8. 
 
The winning pitcher was Al Spalding(1-0) who allowed no runs in 5 and
1/3 innings. Waite Hoyt got the save, his 2nd.  The losing pitcher was
Leon Day(0-1) in relief.  He surrendered 2 hits and 2 walks in 4 and
2/3 innings.
 
 
SASKATOON AT NEW ORLEANS

Mule Suttles connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the Saskatoon
Commodores defeated the New Orleans Pelicans by the score of 8 to 5 at
Fenway Park.
 
Saskatoon came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning scoring 5
runners on 5 hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Bobby
Bonds who silenced the crowd when he banged out a single plating two
runs.  Saskatoon had a total of 14 hits for the game. 
 
Wilbur Cooper(3-0) allowed 5 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the
victory. Hoyt Wilhelm earned the save, his 4th.  Carl Mays(0-1) ended
up with the loss in relief.  He gave up 5 runs and 4 hits in 1 and
2/3 innings. 
 
 
ANCHORAGE AT DES MOINES

Ken Griffey Jr touched them all and had 2 RBI at Wrigley Field where
the Anchorage Gold beat the Des Moines Pickers 7 to 5.
 
Des Moines never recovered after Anchorage took the lead in the 4th
inning scoring 2 runs.  George Foster led off and he was hit by a
pitch.  Two outs later Gabby Hartnett came to bat and popped a two-run
clout over the fence. George Davis then drew a walk.  Anchorage had 9
hits for the afternoon.
 
Big Bill Foster(2-0) went 6 innings allowing 5 runs for the win. Foster
got help from Orel Hershiser who earned his 1st save.  Cy Young(0-3)
suffered the loss.  He served up 4 homeruns in his 8 innings. 
 
 
MEMPHIS AT CHEYENNE

The Cheyenne Gunslingers registered 4 runs in the 2nd inning and
readily handled ice-cold Memphis Belles by a score of 10 to 6 at Forbes
Field.
 
Mickey Mantle had a big evening at the plate.  He stroked a single in
the 1st inning, laced a one-base hit resulting in a run in the 2nd
inning and rifled a three-run blast in the 4th inning.  Cheyenne
finished with 14 hits while Memphis ended up with 8. 
 
Vida Blue(1-1) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory.
Dan Quisenberry gained credit for his 2nd save.  Stan Coveleski(0-2)
was charged with the loss.  It was a tough loss for him as he did not
allow an earned run in his 1 and 2/3 innings of work. 
 
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ESCANABA

Wade Boggs hit a homerun and had 2 RBI and Christy Mathewson completed
the game without help from the bullpen as the Alexandria Dukes bested
the Escanaba Yoopers 6 to 2 at Baker Bowl.
 
In the top of the 2nd inning Alexandria went on top for good when they
came up with 2 runs on 2 hits. Alexandria totaled 10 hits on the night.
 
Mathewson(3-0) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win.
Catfish Hunter(0-2) absorbed the loss.  He surrendered 6 runs and 10
hits in 8 innings.
