Catcher Johnny Bench launched 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Don Drysdale
pitched a complete game as the Escanaba Yoopers crushed the slumping
Memphis Belles 18 to 2.
 
Bench was unconscious out there.  While Memphis pitching was serving
softballs up there for him to hit, the Memphis fans were serving up
some hardball barbs when he entered the batter's box.  But he just used
it as fuel for the fire. He lost the ball over the fence for three runs
in the 1st inning, ripped a single in the 7th inning, blasted a two-run
home run in the 8th inning and lashed a one-base hit in the 9th inning.
Escanaba provided plenty of action in the 1st inning when they had 5
runs on 6 hits and the 8th inning with 7 runs on 7 hits.  Offensively,
Escanaba was a juggernaut.  They scored in 6 separate innings. 
 
Drysdale(4-1) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Mickey
Welch(2-3) was the losing pitcher.  He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. 
 
'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out
there and being prepared,' Bench said. 'You try to hit in your own
capacity and not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day
after day, game by game, and pitch by pitch.'

Ed Walsh went the distance as the Anchorage Gold defeated the Orlando
Wave by the score of 6 to 3 at Ebbets Field.
 
Anchorage scored 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning with the help of
5 hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Barry Bonds who helped
quiet the crowd when he doubled bringing in two baserunners.  Anchorage
finished with 9 hits in the victory.
