Lefty Grove tossed a shutout at Wrigley Field where the Des Moines
Pickers beat the Escanaba Yoopers in 10 innings by the score of 2
to 0.
 
Neither pitching staff had allowed a run after the regulation nine
innings.  Des Moines won the game in the 10th inning.  Paul Molitor led
off and started the rally when he smacked a single.  Arky Vaughan
stepped up to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.  King Kelly
then smashed a two-run homer giving Des Moines the victory and sending
the 32,754 home-town fans home happy.  Des Moines had only 6 hits for
the afternoon. 
 
Grove(3-2) went the distance for the shutout. Bob Gibson(2-5) was given
the loss.  He surrendered 2 runs and 6 hits in 9 and 1/3 innings. 
 
 
CHEYENNE AT NEW ORLEANS

With the crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their
lungs, New Orleans Pelicans rallied to top Cheyenne Gunslingers by the
score of 11 to 10.
 
New Orleans won the game with an offensive outburst in the bottom of
the 9th inning when they exploded for 7 runs on 6 hits.  The big moment
was provided by Ross Youngs who excited the crowd when he tripled
clearing all three ducks off the pond.  This was the kind of game that
many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times. 
 
The win went to Robin Roberts(2-1) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3
innings.  The losing pitcher was Rollie Fingers(1-2) in relief.  'Now
there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Sammy Sosa noted.  'It was
looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away
and it really paid off in spades!  And it was great to see the crowd
go crazy there at the end!'
 
HONOLULU AT LAS VEGAS

Lance Parrish hit 2 doubles as the Honolulu Islanders outscored the
Las Vegas Miners 5 to 1.
 
Tommy John(4-0) had a solid outing for Honolulu.  He was reached for
7 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 2/3 innings improving his ERA from 4.55 to
3.93.  Both teams ended up with 9 hits on the night. 
 
Red Faber earned his 3rd save. Pete Alexander(3-3) took the loss.  He
surrendered 6 hits and no walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
 
MEMPHIS AT ORLANDO

The Orlando Wave plated 4 runs in the 7th inning and nipped the Memphis
Belles 5 to 4 at Ebbets Field in a hard fought contest.
 
Orlando brought 4 runs across the plate in the 7th inning when they
came up with 4 base hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Bobby
Grich who excited the crowd when he stroked a one-base hit bringing
home two baserunners.  Memphis threatened in the 9th but Orlando was
able to put down the rally.
 
Al Spalding(2-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Waite
Hoyt recorded the save, his 3rd.  Tom Glavine(3-2) was charged with
the loss.
 
'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Spalding, 'I got
burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that
matters.'
 
ANCHORAGE AT BUFFALO

George Foster homered and had 2 RBI at Crosley Field as the Anchorage
Gold beat the reeling Buffalo Nickels by the count of 10 to 3.
 
Dwight Gooden(2-2) earned his pay with a solid performance for
Anchorage.  He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings and was
touched for 2 homeruns lowering his ERA to 4.81.  Anchorage had many
opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings. 
 
Addie Joss(2-3) ended up with the loss.  He served up 3 homeruns in his
5 and 2/3 innings.
 
SASKATOON AT ALEXANDRIA

Right fielder Tony Gwynn had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Jim Bunning had a
complete game as the Saskatoon Commodores clobbered the outmatched
Alexandria Dukes, 13 to 2.
 
Bunning(1-5) contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He didn't give up
much, just 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 5.03
to 4.40.  Saskatoon banged out 18 hits on the night. 
 
Juan Marichal(2-3) was tagged with the loss.  He was knocked around
pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.
