In a close game the Escanaba Yoopers got by the Buffalo Nickels by the
score of 7 to 5.
 
Escanaba jumped on top of Buffalo in the bottom of the 7th inning when
they came up with 2 runs on 3 hits.  The key at-bat was by Gil Hodges
who excited the crowd when he bombed a two-run dinger.  Escanaba out-
hit Buffalo for the game, 14 hits to 6. 
 
Ted Lyons(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3
innings. Lyons got relief help from Bruce Sutter who gained credit for
his 5th save.  Eppa Rixey(3-1) was hit with the loss.  He was touched
for 14 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. 
 
 
LAS VEGAS AT DES MOINES

Paul Molitor connected with a 'big fly' and had 4 RBI at Wrigley Field
where the Des Moines Pickers beat the Las Vegas Miners by the score of
9 to 8.
 
It was a good day for Des Moines thanks to Molitor.  He laced a one-
base hit which brought home a run in the 3rd inning, laced a single in
the 5th inning and lofted a three-run bomb in the 7th inning.  Las
Vegas made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across. 
 
Lefty Grove(2-2) allowed 8 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the
victory.  Sparky Lyle got the save, his 5th.  Rube Marquard(0-1)
suffered the loss in relief.  He was not very effective, surrendering
3 runs in 2 innings.
 
Bobby Cox was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good
contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love
winning these tight ones! It was just our evening - no doubt about it!'
 
CHEYENNE AT ORLANDO

Catcher Biz Mackey hit for the cycle and scored 3 times and Vic Willis
went the distance as the Orlando Wave defeated the Cheyenne Gunslingers
by the score of 7 to 1 at Ebbets Field.
 
Mackey had a big evening at the plate.  He delivered a solo blast in
the 1st inning, ripped a single in the 2nd inning, tripled in the 4th
inning and doubled in the 8th inning.  Orlando had 14 hits for the
night. 
 
The victory went to Willis(2-2) who went the distance allowing 1 run.
Randy Johnson(2-2) took the loss.  He served up 4 homeruns in his 7
and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
ANCHORAGE AT HONOLULU

Dick Allen blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Ed Walsh completed the
game without help from the bullpen at Shibe Park as the Anchorage Gold
beat the Honolulu Islanders 7 to 2.
 
Allen led the offense for Anchorage.  He smashed a two-run homer in the
4th inning and clubbed a two-run home run in the 6th inning.  Anchorage
banged out 10 hits on the night. 
 
Walsh(3-0) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. Warren
Spahn(2-3) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 9 innings and
surrendered 10 hits and 1 walk.
 
MEMPHIS AT ALEXANDRIA

The Memphis Belles nipped the Alexandria Dukes 4 to 3 at Tiger Stadium
in a hard fought contest.
 
Eddie Plank(2-3) had a fairly solid outing.  He was reached for 3 hits
and 2 walks in 6 innings and surrendered 3 'round-trippers'. 
Alexandria had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Plank got help from Amos Rusie who was credited with his 1st save.  The
losing pitcher was Sandy Koufax(4-1).  'We just made a lot of mistakes,
mostly mental,' Sparky Anderson said.  'It's bad enough when the other
team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves, that's really
bad.'
