Lou Gehrig cracked 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI and Pete Alexander went the
distance at Yankee Stadium as the Las Vegas Miners beat the Buffalo
Nickels 13 to 9.
 
Gehrig enjoyed a great day at the plate.  Every time he came up in the
latter innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering.  He lashed a
single plating a run in the 3rd inning, lofted a three-run bomb in the
5th inning, doubled in the 6th inning and bombed a two-run dinger in
the 8th inning.  Las Vegas managed 16 hits in their victory. 
 
The winning pitcher was Alexander(2-0) who allowed 9 runs for the game.
Tim Keefe(0-2) was the losing pitcher.  He served up 3 homeruns in his
4 and 1/3 innings.

Hank Aaron blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Shibe Park where the
Honolulu Islanders beat the Orlando Wave 5 to 4.
 
Aaron had a good day at the plate. He clubbed a two-run home run in the
3rd inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the
8th inning.  Orlando had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. 
 
Warren Spahn(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 8 innings.
Spahn got help from Leon Day who was credited with his 2nd save.  The
loss was charged to Kevin Brown(0-2). 
 
'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Casey
Stengal said.  'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was
hard to take.'
 
SASKATOON AT NEW ORLEANS

Sammy Sosa smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Babe Adams went 9
strong innings as the sizzling New Orleans Pelicans defeated the
Saskatoon Commodores by the score of 5 to 1 at Fenway Park.
 
Sosa enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He delivered a one-base hit
in the 1st inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, slapped
a single in the 4th inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 7th
inning.  New Orleans totaled 11 hits on the night. 
 
The victory went to Adams(2-0) who went the distance allowing 1 run.
The losing pitcher was Walter Johnson(1-1).  He got hit hard, allowing
11 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings. 
 
 
ANCHORAGE AT DES MOINES

Gabby Hartnett smashed 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Des Moines
Pickers were badly beaten by the Anchorage Gold, 15 to 5.
 
Hartnett had a big day with his bat.  He doubled in the 2nd inning,
cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 3rd inning, smashed a
solo-shot out of the park in the 5th inning and hit a bases-empty home
run in the 6th inning.  Anchorage lit up the scoreboard in the 5th
inning which saw them score 4 runs on 5 hits.  The Anchorage offense
poured it on, scoring in 8 of the 9 innings. 
 
Ed Walsh(2-0) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 runs for the win. Cy
Young(0-2) ended up with the loss.  He served up 4 gopher balls in
4 and 2/3 innings. 
 
 
MEMPHIS AT CHEYENNE

The Cheyenne Gunslingers edged the Memphis Belles at Forbes Field by
the score of 3 to 2.
 
Cheyenne had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning
with 2 runs on 2 base hits.  Jake Beckley led off and got things going
when he drew a walk.  Henderson was safe on a stolen base.  Lou Brock
then slapped a one-base hit.  Brock took second on the throw.  Pete
Rose was up next and he doubled.  Memphis made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 
 
Whitey Ford(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Rollie
Fingers recorded the save, his 2nd.  Mickey Welch(0-2) was hit with
the loss. 
 
Bill McKechnie was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure,
this kind of loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all
professionals.  We've been through this many times - it's the nature
of the game.  We'll be fine - as for me - I'll be ready to go again
tomorrow!'

The Alexandria Dukes got by the Escanaba Yoopers at Baker Bowl.  The
final score was 8 to 6.
 
Tug McGraw(1-0) slammed the door shut in an excellent relief
performance.  He gave up just 1 hit and no walks in 3 innings.  This
was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead
kept changing - 7 times in all.
 
Jeff Reardon(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief.  He surrendered
2 runs and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.
