At Crosley Field the Honolulu Islanders were battered 10 to 4 by the
Buffalo Nickels.

Babe Ruth made sure the Buffalo fans enjoyed themselves.  He blasted a
two-run home run in the 4th inning, stroked a base-hit in the 5th
inning and doubled which brought home a run in the 6th inning.  Overall
Buffalo out-hit Honolulu 12 to 9. 

Addie Joss(12-7) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings
and allowing 4 runs. Ron Guidry(4-4) took the loss.  Buffalo scored big
getting 6 runs off him in 4 and 2/3 innings. 


SASKATOON AT CHEYENNE

At Forbes Field the Saskatoon Commodores outscored the dreadful
Cheyenne Gunslingers 9 to 6.

Saskatoon came up with 7 runs in the 3rd inning with the help of 7
hits.  That was all the runs Jim Bunning(9-12) needed.  Cheyenne went
down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th. 

Hoyt Wilhelm earned his 21st save.  John Smoltz(2-9) was the losing
pitcher.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 2 innings of work. 

With the win Saskatoon now has a record of 59-64.  With the loss,
Cheyenne has a record of 3-7 lately, 47-76, worst in the division
overall.

NEW ORLEANS AT ESCANABA

Shortstop Willie Wells rocketed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Pud Galvin
allowed Bucky Harris to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as
the New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Escanaba Yoopers by a score of 9
to 2 at Baker Bowl.

Wells enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He laced a single in the 6th
inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 8th inning and popped a two-run
clout over the fence in the 9th inning.  New Orleans had 14 hits for
the night.

Galvin(13-8) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Bob
Gibson(7-16) was the loser.  He gave up 8 runs and 12 hits in 8
innings.

New Orleans now has a record of 64-59.  With the loss, the Escanaba
ballclub's record is 53-74, worst in the division.

ORLANDO AT LAS VEGAS

Oscar Charleston knocked 2 homeruns and had 8 RBI and Rube Waddell
completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Orlando Wave
crushed the Las Vegas Miners 15 to 3.

Charleston really lit it up for Orlando.  The Las Vegas fans let him
have it for what he did to their boys.  He belted a three-run homer in
the 1st inning, doubled clearing the bases in the 4th inning, delivered
a base-hit in the 6th inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence
in the 9th inning.  Orlando bats were hot in the 1st inning with 4 runs
on 5 hits, the 4th inning which saw them score 4 runs on 4 hits and the
7th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits.  Orlando rapped out
20 hits for the night. 

Waddell(7-8) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Pete
Alexander(14-10) absorbed the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 6 hits
and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings. 

'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out
there and being prepared,' Charleston said. 'You try to hit in your own
capacity and not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day
after day, game by game, and pitch by pitch.'

DES MOINES AT MEMPHIS

Right fielder Al Kaline slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Des
Moines Pickers beat the Memphis Belles by a score of 6 to 3.

Kaline had a big day against Memphis.  He lashed a single in the 1st
inning, ripped a one-base hit in the 3rd inning, hit a bases-empty home
run in the 7th inning and clubbed a two-run home run in the 9th inning.
Des Moines had 11 hits overall, while Memphis had 6. 

Curt Schilling(11-14) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the
victory.  Sparky Lyle was credited with his 15th save.  The loss was
charged to Tom Glavine(9-11). 


ALEXANDRIA AT ANCHORAGE

The Alexandria Dukes had an easy time of it at Metrodome defeating the
Anchorage Gold by a score of 10 to 5.

Roy Campanella provided much of the offense.  He hit a single in the
2nd inning, ripped a base-hit in the 3rd inning and lost the ball over
the fence for three runs in the 5th inning.  Alexandria finished with
14 hits while Anchorage ended up with 6. 

Don Sutton(13-8) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 8 and 1/3
innings.  Ed Walsh(14-9) ended up with the loss.  He was knocked around
by Alexandria, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
