Johnny Bench had 2 base hits as the Escanaba Yoopers bested the
Saskatoon Commodores 4 to 2 at Baker Bowl.

Escanaba brought 2 runs across the plate in the 4th inning.  The big
moment was provided by Jim Rice who thrilled the crowd when he cleared
the fences for a two-run home run.  Saskatoon tried unsuccessfully to
come back in the 9th. 

The win was credited to Catfish Hunter(4-16) who went 8 innings
allowing 1 run. Hunter got relief help from Bruce Sutter who gained
credit for his 29th save.  The loss was charged to Jim Bunning(9-13). 


DES MOINES AT BUFFALO

Goose Goslin had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Crosley Field as the Des
Moines Pickers beat the Buffalo Nickels by the count of 7 to 2.

Curt Schilling(12-14) delivered a fine performance for Des Moines.  He
allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.  Schilling racked up 9
strikeouts and surrendered 2 homeruns.  Des Moines had 14 hits for the
night while Buffalo had 6. 

Tim Keefe(11-15) was the losing pitcher.  He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 12 hits and 5 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
 
CHEYENNE AT LAS VEGAS

In an exciting finish the Las Vegas Miners pulled out a win over the
dreadful Cheyenne Gunslingers by a score of 3 to 2 at Yankee Stadium.

The game was won by Las Vegas when they scored a run in the bottom of
the 9th inning.  Ryne Sandberg drew a walk.  After an out was recorded,
Hughie Jennings stepped up to the plate and he doubled.  Tris Speaker
then singled making Las Vegas the victor and beginning a joyous home
town celebration.  Las Vegas had 10 hits for the night. 

The victory went to Allie Reynolds(4-3) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Whitey Ford(11-11) absorbed the loss.  He pitched
8 and 1/3 innings allowing 9 hits and 5 walks.

MEMPHIS AT ORLANDO

Tom Glavine carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and Chuck Klein
knocked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Memphis Belles really laid it
on the Orlando Wave 16 to 3.

Klein propelled Memphis to victory.  He smashed a two-run homer in the
2nd inning, rifled a three-run blast in the 4th inning and ripped a
one-base hit in the 7th inning.  Memphis bats were very productive in
the 3rd inning when they had 7 runs on 7 hits and the 4th inning which
saw them score 4 runs on 4 hits.  Offensively, Memphis was a
juggernaut.  They scored in 6 separate innings. 

Glavine(10-11) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. The
left-handed Glavine lost his chance for a no-hitter when Elmer Flick
doubled with two outs in the 6th inning.  Gaylord Perry(13-10) ended up
with the loss.  He was knocked around by Memphis, allowing 5 hits and 2
walks in 2 innings. 


HONOLULU AT ANCHORAGE

Mickey Cochrane had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Honolulu Islanders defeated
the Anchorage Gold by a score of 9 to 7 at Metrodome.

Red Faber(5-4) got the win with a nice relief outing.  He gave up just
3 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings dropping his ERA from 4.65 to
4.39.  Honolulu and Anchorage each finished the night with 11 hits. 

Leon Day got the save, his 21st.  Orel Hershiser(2-2) was hit with the
loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 runs and no hits in 1 inning.

NEW ORLEANS AT ALEXANDRIA

In a good matchup it was the Alexandria Dukes 10, the New Orleans
Pelicans 7 at Tiger Stadium.

Tommy Bridges(2-5) was given credit for the win.  He went 1 inning and
surrended up 2 hits and 1 walk.  Alexandria out-hit New Orleans for the
game, 17 hits to 13. 

Goose Gossage recorded the save, his 11th.  Mel Harder(3-2) suffered
the loss in relief.  He allowed 3 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an
inning.
