Brooks Robinson blasted 2 homeruns as the Buffalo Nickels clobbered the
outmatched Escanaba Yoopers, 13 to 3.

It seemed that Escanaba pitching was serving up softballs for Robinson
to hit.  He launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 4th inning, cracked a
solo homerun in the 5th inning and lined a base-hit plating a run in
the 7th inning.  Buffalo out-hit Escanaba for the game, 14 hits to 9. 

Eppa Rixey(10-7) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. The
loss was charged to Catfish Hunter(3-16).  He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 6 hits and 4 walks in 3 innings. 

The Buffalo ballclub's record now stands at 62-60.  Escanaba has a
record of 53-73, worst in the division after the loss.

Ralph Kiner had 4 hits as the Saskatoon Commodores defeated the Des
Moines Pickers in 10 innings by the score of 9 to 7 at Wrigley Field.

The score was tied at 6 after nine.  Saskatoon came out on top in the
10th inning.  Ken Singleton kicked off the action when he ripped a
single.  Hamilton took second on a stolen base.  Kiner then slapped
a single.  Bobby Doerr was next to the plate, but was promptly struck
out.  Pop Lloyd came up to bat and clubbed a two-run home run.  One
out later, Bobby Bonds came to bat and reached on an error.  Des
Moines out-hit Saskatoon 15 to 10, but Saskatoon ended up with more
runs. 

The victory was credited to Herb Pennock(4-2) who went 2 innings,
allowing 1 run. Pennock got relief help from Wilbur Cooper who gained
credit for his 1st save.  Tom Henke(4-3) suffered the loss in relief. 
Saskatoon scored big getting 4 runs off him in 2 innings.

Al Simmons recorded 4 RBI with one swing when he ripped a grand slam as
the Honolulu Islanders beat the Las Vegas Miners by a score of 10 to 7.

Simmons was really in 'the zone'.  He tripled in the 2nd inning,
doubled which brought home a run in the 3rd inning and blasted a Grand
Slam homerun in the 7th inning.  Honolulu had 17 hits for the afternoon
while Las Vegas had 12.

The win was credited to Mike Mussina(8-1) who went 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 6 runs. Leon Day earned his 19th save.  Bullet Joe Rogan(8-17)
was charged with the loss.  He allowed Honolulu 9 runs in 6 innings of
work. 

'I had good swings today,' Simmons said, 'Everything felt right'.

Jimmie Foxx hit a homerun and had 2 RBI and Mickey Welch went 9 strong
innings at Polo Grounds where the Memphis Belles beat the New Orleans
Pelicans by the score of 3 to 0.

Welch(11-11) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the New Orleans
offense.  He allowed only 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.  The New
Orleans batters didn't put up a fight in the 9th. 

Babe Adams(11-9) was given the loss. 'He had his 'A' game today,' Bill
McKechnie said of Welch.  'Very impressive performance.'
 
ANCHORAGE AT CHEYENNE

Randy Johnson retired 13 batters on strikeouts and Pete Rose had 2 base
hits and 2 RBI as the Cheyenne Gunslingers won a heart-stopping victory
over the Anchorage Gold, 4 to 3.

The game was decided in the 9th inning.  After two outs Jake Beckley
drew a walk.  Lou Brock followed and he drew a walk.  Rose then stroked
a single giving Cheyenne the win and sending the home town fans into a
frenzy.  Cheyenne totaled 9 hits on the afternoon. 

The win went to Dan Quisenberry(5-1) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.
Dwight Gooden(7-9) absorbed the loss.  With the win Cheyenne now has a
record of 47-75.  With the loss, Anchorage has a record of 6-4 lately,
72-50 overall.

ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Oscar Charleston lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 4 RBI and
Gaylord Perry pitched a complete game as the Orlando Wave topped the
Alexandria Dukes by a score of 8 to 2 at Ebbets Field.

It was a good day for Orlando thanks to Charleston.  He smacked a
three-run homer in the 3rd inning, ripped a base-knock resulting in a
run in the 5th inning and lashed a single in the 7th inning.  Orlando
banged out 11 hits on the night. 

The win was credited to Perry(13-9) who went the whole way allowing 2
runs.  The losing pitcher was Juan Marichal(12-9).  Orlando knocked him
around a bit, as he gave up 8 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. 

Orlando now has a record of 59-63.  With the loss Alexandria now has a
record of 72-50.
