In a two run game the Escanaba Yoopers got by the Saskatoon Commodores
by the score of 4 to 2.

Don Drysdale(8-9) gave Escanaba a solid outing.  He surrendered 5 hits
and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.  Saskatoon threatened in the 9th but
Escanaba was able to put down the rally. 

Drysdale was helped out by Bruce Sutter who recorded his 26th save. 
Walter Johnson(10-12) absorbed the loss.  He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits
in 8 innings.

In a thriling finish the Anchorage Gold pulled off the win over the Las
Vegas Miners by a score of 5 to 4 at Metrodome.

The game was won by Anchorage when they scored a run in the 9th inning.
Bernie Williams drew a walk.  George Davis came next and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt.  After another out, Eddie Mathews came to the plate and
doubled giving Anchorage the win as 48,653 happy fans joyfully
celebrated.  Anchorage rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon. 

The winning pitcher was Don Newcombe(6-5) who allowed 2 runs in 3
innings. The loss was charged to Bullet Joe Rogan(8-16).  He pitched
8 and 1/3 innings allowing 8 hits and 6 walks.

 
BUFFALO AT DES MOINES

The Buffalo Nickels had an easy time of it at Wrigley Field defeating
the Des Moines Pickers by a score of 9 to 3.

Buffalo wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring 4
runners on 3 hits.  That scoring would be all that was needed.  Buffalo
had 10 hits overall, while Des Moines had 7. 

The victory went to Carl Hubbell(16-6) who went 8 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 3 runs. Dennis Eckersley(4-4) was the loser.  He surrended
4 homeruns in his 3 and 1/3 innings.

In a close game it was the Orlando Wave 4, the New Orleans Pelicans 2
at Ebbets Field.

Orlando took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the 4th inning plating
one baserunner using 3 hits.  Overall Orlando out-hit New Orleans 11 to
6. 

The victory was credited to Rube Foster(3-3) who went 3 and 2/3
innings, allowing 1 run. Waite Hoyt recorded his 8th save.  Satchel
Paige(14-8) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed a few too many base-
runners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. 


HONOLULU AT CHEYENNE

48,981 fans watched an exciting game at Forbes Field.  The Cheyenne
Gunslingers finally stopped their 6 slide with the victory and topped
the Honolulu Islanders by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.

Honolulu found themselves trailing quickly as the Cheyenne bats came
through in the first inning scoring one runner on 2 base hits. 
Honolulu had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. 

The win was credited to Jack Morris(5-15) who went 7 and 2/3 innings
allowing 4 runs. Dan Quisenberry gained credit for his 11th save. 
Tommy John(12-7) was given the loss.  Cheyenne scored big getting 5
runs off him in 4 innings.

'Ahhh, how sweet it is,' Tony La Russa sighed.  'That win feels like
a tall, cool drink of water after spending far too much time in the
desert lately.'

MEMPHIS AT ALEXANDRIA

Maury Wills had 4 hits and Three Finger Brown pitched a complete game
as the Memphis Belles defeated the Alexandria Dukes by the score of 4
to 3 at Tiger Stadium.

Memphis set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single
run.  Alexandria threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. 

The win went to Brown(10-6) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Juan
Marichal(12-8) suffered the loss.  'Fundamentals, fundamentals,
fundamentals' said Sparky Anderson after the game.  'We lost this game
tonight because we didn't follow the instructions every Little Leaguer
hears every day.'
