Lou Boudreau connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI as the Saskatoon
Commodores bested the Des Moines Pickers 8 to 3 at Wrigley Field.

Saskatoon drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first
inning when they came up with 2 runs on 2 hits.  Hoyt Wilhelm came
throught with a perfect ninth inning to earn his 19th save. 

Red Ruffing(6-7) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the
victory.  Nolan Ryan(13-7) took the loss.  He gave up 8 runs in 7 and
1/3 innings of work.


LAS VEGAS AT ANCHORAGE

Right fielder Mel Ott cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Anchorage
Gold won in dramatic fashion over the Las Vegas Miners by a score of 6
to 5 at Metrodome.

Anchorage scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs. 
Gabby Hartnett led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk.  Two
outs later Ott came to the plate and bombed a two-run dinger resulting
in an exciting win for Anchorage and a wild post-game celebration by
the home town fans.  Las Vegas had 11 hits in the game while Anchorage
had 8, but Anchorage had the more timely hits. 

Kid Nichols(5-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 2/3 of an inning
and allowing no runs. Bullet Joe Rogan(8-15) was given the loss.  He
surrended 4 homeruns in his 8 and 2/3 innings. 


ORLANDO AT NEW ORLEANS

Babe Adams went 9 strong innings at Fenway Park as the New Orleans
Pelicans beat the Orlando Wave by the count of 5 to 3.

Adams(11-8) pitched a fine game.  He went 9 innings surrendering 5 hits
and no walks.  After the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score. 

Smokey Joe Williams(8-9) was the losing pitcher.  He was knocked around
by New Orleans, allowing 13 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

HONOLULU AT ESCANABA

Tommy John pitched a 3 hitter and Joe Gordon had 4 hits at Baker Bowl
where the Honolulu Islanders beat the Escanaba Yoopers by the score of
9 to 2.

Gordon enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He depressed the partisan
hometown fans with a grand slam home run in the 1st inning, lined a
one-base hit in the 3rd inning, banged out a single in the 5th inning
and tripled knocking in a run in the 7th inning.  Honolulu banged out
12 hits on the night.

John(12-6) allowed 2 runs on the game. Babe Ruth(13-7) was tagged with
the loss.  Gordon was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing
and hitting the ball real well now.  I made some adjustments last week
and they are paying off.  That's what this game is about. making
adjustments as the season goes along.'

ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

Eddie Plank completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Memphis Belles defeated the Alexandria Dukes 7 to 6 at Polo Grounds.

Plank(8-11) delivered a fine performance for Memphis.  He allowed 13
hits and no walks in 9 innings and surrendered 2 'long-bombs'. 
Alexandria had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Sandy Koufax(14-10) ended up with the loss.  He served up 3 gopher
balls in 7 innings.  Sparky Anderson was in a contemplative mood after
the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game.  It may
seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out
loss.  It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much -
like this one!'
