Third baseman Bill Dahlen touched them all and had 4 RBI and Walter
Johnson tossed a complete game as the Saskatoon Commodores defeated the
Des Moines Pickers by the score of 6 to 5 at Wrigley Field.

Dahlen had a big day at the plate.  He blasted a two-run home run in
the 4th inning and doubled plating two runs in the 8th inning.  Both
teams finished the game with 8 hits. 

The win was credited to Johnson(10-11) who went the whole way allowing
5 runs.  Lefty Grove(8-8) was the loser.  He surrendered 8 hits and 3
walks in 9 innings. 


LAS VEGAS AT ANCHORAGE

Center fielder George Foster had 2 base hits and 4 RBI as the Anchorage
Gold beat the Las Vegas Miners by a score of 9 to 6.

Anchorage came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning scoring 6
runners on 3 hits.  The key at-bat was by Foster who came through for
the home fans when he doubled with all three baserunners touching home.
Anchorage had 10 hits for the afternoon. 

Dennis Martinez(7-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3
innings and allowing 6 runs. Luis Tiant preserved the game for
Martinez, recording his his 19th.  Dazzy Vance(5-4) was the losing
pitcher in relief. 

The winning ways continue for Anchorage.  They now have a record of
8-2 in recent days.  With the loss, the Las Vegas ballclub's record
is 56-61.

Catcher Josh Gibson went deep and had 3 RBI at Fenway Park where the
New Orleans Pelicans beat the Orlando Wave by the score of 13 to 5.

Gibson enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He doubled in the 2nd inning,
cracked a two-run shot in the 4th inning and slapped a single resulting
in a run in the 8th inning.  New Orleans lit up the scoreboard in the
5th inning with 3 runs on 4 hits and the 8th inning when they had 3
runs on 3 hits.  New Orleans kept the pressure on throughout the
contest as they scored in 6 different innings. 

Ferguson Jenkins(5-11) got the win allowing 5 runs in 8 and 2/3
innings. Kevin Brown(5-17) absorbed the loss.  He allowed 10 hits and
2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Ron Guidry went 9 solid innings as the Honolulu Islanders smashed the
overmatched Escanaba Yoopers, 14 to 0.

Barry Larkin was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed
a fine day at their team's expense.  He doubled bringing in two base-
runners in the 2nd inning, delivered a one-base hit which plated a run
in the 6th inning and laced a base-knock scoring two baserunners in the
9th inning.  Honolulu had many opportunities throughout the game and
scored in 6 separate innings.

Guidry(4-3) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Don
Drysdale(7-9) was tagged with the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 12
hits and 4 walks in 7 innings. 

'He came out with good stuff,' Connie Mack said about Guidry. 'He threw
the ball good from the first pitch on.'

ALEXANDRIA AT MEMPHIS

Tom Glavine(9-10) and Juan Marichal(12-7) locked horns in a pitcher's
duel with Glavine and the Memphis Belles coming out on top of the
Alexandria Dukes 3 to 1.

Glavine pitched a solid game.  He went 8 and 1/3 innings surrendering 5
hits and 2 walks reducing his ERA from 5.09 to 4.88.  The pitchers took
over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again. 

Phil Niekro was credited with his 12th save.
