Ed Lopat carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning and Earl Averill
lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the Las Vegas
Miners beat the Honolulu Islanders by a score of 7 to 4.

Lopat(5-9) had a solid outing for Las Vegas.  He went 7 and 2/3 innings
and surrended up 3 hits and 3 walks.  The left-hand Lopat lost his no-
hit bid when Lance Parrish homered with two outs in the 7th inning. 
Las Vegas had 12 hits for the afternoon while Honolulu had 4. 

Lopat got help from Allie Reynolds who earned his 15th save.  Greg
Maddux(6-9) ended up with the loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits
and 2 walks in 8 innings. 

Las Vegas now has a record of 51-59.  With this loss, Honolulu has a
4-6 record of late, 58-54 overall.

In a close game it was the Escanaba Yoopers 4, the Buffalo Nickels 2 at
Crosley Field.

Buffalo was unable to climb back into it after Escanaba went ahead for
good in the 4th inning plating one baserunner on 2 hits.  Escanaba
finished with 10 hits in the victory. 

The win went to Ray Brown(7-10) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings. Brown
was helped out by Bruce Sutter who recorded his 24th save.  The loss
was charged to Old Hoss Radbourn(1-7).

John McGraw had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Des Moines Pickers bested
the New Orleans Pelicans 11 to 6 at Wrigley Field.

Sparky Lyle(8-6) earned the victory with a fine relief performance.  He
didn't give up much, just 1 hit and 1 walk in 4 and 1/3 innings and
chalked up 5 strikeouts reducing his ERA from 4.71 to 4.41.  Des Moines
had 15 hits for the game and New Orleans had 8. 

Joe McGinnity(7-9) was tagged with the loss.  He was hit hard and gave
up 11 hits and 6 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Joe Dimaggio had 3 base hits as the Memphis Belles defeated the
Anchorage Gold 4 to 3 at Polo Grounds.

Memphis scored all of the necessary runs in the 3rd inning when they
scored 4 runs on 6 hits.  That was all the runs Eddie Plank(7-11)
needed.  For the game Memphis out-hit Anchorage 13 to 7. 

Plank got relief help from Phil Niekro who gained credit for his 10th
save. Ed Walsh(13-7) suffered the loss.  Wth the win Memphis now has a
record of 52-58.  Even with the loss, Anchorage still has a nice 8-2
record in recent weeks.  They are 65-45 on the season.

CHEYENNE AT ALEXANDRIA

Shortstop Dave Concepcion rocketed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the
Cheyenne Gunslingers topped the Alexandria Dukes by a score of 11 to 9
at Tiger Stadium.

Concepcion had a big day against Alexandria.  He popped a two-run clout
over the fence in the 7th inning and smacked a three-run homer in the
8th inning.  Alexandria made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across. 

Whitey Ford(10-9) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3
innings and allowing 6 runs. Mickey Lolich gained credit for his 2nd
save.  The losing pitcher was Sandy Koufax(14-9).  He allowed 3
homeruns in 7 and 1/3 innings of work. 

'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Sparky
Anderson said after the game.  'Maybe now these guys will listen when I
say they have to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'
