Catcher Mickey Cochrane hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the Honolulu
Islanders staged a dramatic comeback over the Las Vegas Miners by a
score of 5 to 4 at Yankee Stadium.

Honolulu scored the winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring
3 runs utilizing 3 base hits.  Rafael Palmeiro opened up the inning
nicely when he drew a walk.  Cochrane next to the plate and he ripped a
one-base hit.  After an out was recorded, George Kell stepped in and he
doubled.  John Clarkson then was wild with a pitch.  Barry Larkin was
the next batter, but he struck out.  Joe Gordon kept things alive and
stroked a single.  Honolulu and Las Vegas each finished the night with
8 hits. 

The victory went to Hilton Smith(12-7) who went 8 innings, allowing 4
runs. Smith got help from Leon Day who was credited with his 17th save.
Dazzy Vance(4-3) was given the loss in relief. 

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Cochrane said. 'If
you just keep trying good things can happen!'

Hack Wilson hit one over the fence as the Buffalo Nickels defeated the
Escanaba Yoopers by the score of 8 to 5 at Crosley Field.

Lon Warneke(3-5) came through for Joe McCarthy with an excellent relief
stint.  He didn't give up much, just 1 hit and no walks in 2 and 1/3
innings. Buffalo finished with 12 hits while Escanaba ended up with 9. 

Jack Chesbro recorded the save, his 12th.  Bob Gibson(6-14) absorbed
the loss.  He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 8 innings of work.

George Kelly had 4 hits and 4 RBI at Wrigley Field as the Des Moines
Pickers embarrassed the New Orleans Pelicans by the lopsided score of
13 to 3.

Kelly enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He doubled scoring a run in
the 1st inning, slapped a one-base hit knocking in a run in the 5th
inning, laced a base-hit which scored a run in the 6th inning and
stroked a one-base hit in the 8th inning.  Des Moines ended up with
18 hits for the game while New Orleans had 10. 

Lefty Grove(8-7) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the
victory.  Ferguson Jenkins(3-11) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed
10 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. 

With this win, Des Moines has a division leading 59-47 record.  They
have been 7-3 lately.  New Orleans has a record of 55-51 after the
loss.

Big Bill Foster completed the game without help from the bullpen at
Polo Grounds where the smoking-hot Anchorage Gold beat the Memphis
Belles by the score of 3 to 2.

Anchorage scored 2 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 3 hits. 
The crucial at-bat was provided by Bill Madlock who disappointed the
partisan crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners.  After the 4th
inning, neither team was able to score. 

Foster(15-8) allowed 2 runs on the game. Tom Glavine(8-10) ended up
with the loss.  He gave up 9 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.

CHEYENNE AT ALEXANDRIA

Randy Johnson dominated striking out 11 Alexandria batters and Mickey
Mantle blasted 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Tiger Stadium where the
Cheyenne Gunslingers beat the Alexandria Dukes 8 to 6.

Mantle was a source of great heartache for the Alexandria faithful all
day.  He just kept pounding out hits! He laced a single in the 3rd
inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 5th inning,
smashed a two-run homer in the 7th inning and hit a bases-empty home
run in the 9th inning.  For the game Cheyenne out-hit Alexandria 13 to
8. 

Johnson(6-13) got the win allowing 6 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Rollie
Fingers recorded his 12th save.  Don Sutton(10-8) was charged with the
loss.  He served up 3 gopher balls in 6 and 1/3 innings. 

Johnson, when asked about his 11 strikeout performance noted, 'The
important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does
it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!'
