Bert Blyleven completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Las Vegas Miners beat the floundering Cheyenne Gunslingers by a score
of 5 to 1.

Blyleven(10-10) had a strong outing.  He gave up just 9 hits and 1 walk
in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.95 to 4.75.  After the 4th inning,
neither team was able to score. 

John Smoltz(2-7) was hit with the loss.  He pitched 9 innings and
surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks.

First baseman Frank Thomas hit a homerun and had 3 RBI and Jim Palmer
tossed a complete game as the Anchorage Gold defeated the Honolulu
Islanders by a score of 10 to 3 at Shibe Park.

Honolulu was unable to climb back into it after Anchorage went ahead
for good in the top of the 3rd inning with 3 runs on 4 hits.  Gabby
Hartnett started the scoring when he blasted a solo shot.  Jeff Kent
stepped into the batter's box and he clubbed a solo home run.  George
Davis then slapped a single.  Mel Ott followed and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt.  Barry Bonds followed, but he was set down on strikes. 
Ken Griffey Jr kept things alive and hit a single. Griffey Jr took
second on the throw.  Thomas was next and he was walked intentionally. 
Anchorage banged out 12 hits on the night. 

Palmer(13-4), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory.
Tommy John(11-6) was the losing pitcher.  He served up 4 gopher balls
in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Joe McGinnity had a complete game and designated hitter Harold Baines
touched them all at Polo Grounds where the New Orleans Pelicans beat
the Memphis Belles 7 to 4.

McGinnity(7-8) pitched a solid game.  He went 9 innings allowing 11
hits and 4 walks.  Memphis proved to be no trouble in the bottom of
the 9th. 

Three Finger Brown(8-6) was the loser.  He got hit hard, allowing 13
hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

ESCANABA AT DES MOINES

Left fielder Ted Williams smashed 2 homeruns and Nolan Ryan tossed a
complete game at Wrigley Field as the Des Moines Pickers beat the
Escanaba Yoopers 12 to 6.

Ryan(13-6) delivered a fine performance for Des Moines.  He went 9
innings surrendering 10 hits and 5 walks and gave up 2 homeruns. 
Des Moines had a total of 16 hits for the game. 

Don Drysdale(6-8) ended up with the loss. He got hammered, allowing 8
hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.  The Des Moines ballclub's record now
stands at a division leading 57-46.  With this loss, Escanaba has a
7-3 record of late, 44-62, worst in the division overall.

The Buffalo Nickels nipped the Saskatoon Commodores 3 to 2 at Crosley
Field in a hard fought contest.

Buffalo came up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  After
two were out Javy Lopez initiated the scoring when he smashed a solo-
shot out of the park.  Hack Wilson came to the plate and smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly'.  Saskatoon threatened in the 9th but Buffalo
was able to put down the rally.

Tim Keefe(9-13) allowed 2 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Keefe got relief help from Jack Chesbro who gained credit for
his 11th save.  Walter Johnson(9-10) absorbed the loss.  He was touched
for 3 homeruns in his 8 innings of work. 


ORLANDO AT ALEXANDRIA

Juan Marichal had a complete game as the Alexandria Dukes outscored the
Orlando Wave 5 to 3.

Alexandria had the winning rally in the 8th inning plating 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Wade Boggs was the
sparkplug when he drew a walk.  One out later, Ty Cobb came up and he
delivered a one-base hit.  Joe Jackson then doubled.  Alexandria had
11 hits for the afternoon.

Marichal(12-6) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. The
losing pitcher was Gaylord Perry(11-8).  He was hit hard and gave up
11 hits and 5 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
