In a good matchup it was the Cheyenne Gunslingers 7, the Las Vegas
Miners 4 at Forbes Field.

Cheyenne took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring
a single run.  Las Vegas was out-hit by Cheyenne, 12 hits to 9. 

Vida Blue(9-11) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 and 1/3
innings.  Blue got relief help from Dan Quisenberry who gained credit
for his 10th save.  Tom Seaver(6-4) ended up with the loss.  He got hit
hard, allowing 10 hits and 6 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

The Anchorage Gold edged the Honolulu Islanders in 12 innings at Shibe
Park by the score of 6 to 5.

The score was tied at 5 after nine.  Anchorage came out on top in the
12th inning.  Bill Madlock slapped a one-base hit.  Chief Bender then
threw one that got by the catcher for a passed ball.  After an out was
recorded, Bender came to bat and let loose a wild pitch.  Overall
Anchorage out-hit Honolulu 16 to 13. 

Luis Tiant(1-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.
Don Newcombe earned the save, his 3rd.  Bender(2-5) was charged with
the loss in relief. 

 
NEW ORLEANS AT MEMPHIS

Chuck Klein had 2 base hits at Polo Grounds as the Memphis Belles beat
the New Orleans Pelicans by the count of 5 to 4.

Memphis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring one
runner.  Robbie Alomar drew a walk.  Klein next to the plate and he hit
a single.  Joe Dimaggio then grounded into a double play.  New Orleans
had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. 

Stan Coveleski(6-10) got the win allowing 1 run in 8 innings. Phil
Niekro recorded his 9th save.  The losing pitcher was Babe Adams(9-8). 
'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Bucky Harris 'but it's losing the
close ones that really hurt.'
 
ESCANABA AT DES MOINES

Cy Young had a complete game and shortstop Arky Vaughan had 2 base hits
as the Des Moines Pickers defeated the Escanaba Yoopers by the score of
5 to 2 at Wrigley Field.

Des Moines won the game with a rally in the 8th inning scoring 3 runs
using 3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Al Kaline kicked off the
action when he doubled.  Jackie Robinson struck out, unable to help the
rally.  Paul Molitor then drew a walk.  Vaughan was up next and he
lined a base-hit, and an error was also committed.  King Kelly came up
to bat and drew a walk.  Bullet Joe Rogan did his part to keep things
going and ripped a single.  Des Moines managed 11 hits in their
victory. 

Young(3-8) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Catfish Hunter
(3-13) was the loser.  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up
10 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. 


SASKATOON AT BUFFALO

Eppa Rixey allowed Joe McCarthy to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game at Crosley Field as the Saskatoon Commodores lost a heartbreaker
to Buffalo Nickels by the score of 3 to 2.

Buffalo scored the deciding run in the 9th inning.  Babe Ruth drew a
walk.  Mark McGwire came next and he was hit by a pitch.  Harmon
Killebrew was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim.  Yogi Berra
followed and he doubled giving Buffalo the win much to the delight of
the home town crowd.  Buffalo finished with 7 hits in the victory. 

The winning pitcher was Rixey(8-5) who allowed 2 runs for the game.
Hoyt Wilhelm(4-3) was hit with the loss in relief.  He gave up 2 hits
and 1 walk in 2 and 1/3 innings. 


ORLANDO AT ALEXANDRIA

The Orlando Wave defeated the Alexandria Dukes by a score of 7 to 4 at
Tiger Stadium.

Orlando jumped on top of Alexandria in the 2nd inning when they came up
with 2 runs on 1 hit.  The big moment was provided by Jimmy Collins who
deflated the crowd as he singled scoring two baserunners.  Both teams
totaled 14 hits on the night. 

The winning pitcher was Smokey Joe Williams(8-8) who allowed 4 runs in
7 and 1/3 innings. Burleigh Grimes was credited with his 6th save. 
Sandy Koufax(14-8) was tagged with the loss.  He was touched for 8 hits
and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
