The Las Vegas Miners cruised to a 10 to 4 victory over the Cheyenne
Gunslingers at Forbes Field.
Jose Canseco had a good day at the plate. He cracked a solo homerun in
the 4th inning, doubled scoring two baserunners in the 5th inning and
laced a single in the 9th inning. Cheyenne was out-hit by Las Vegas,
17 hits to 9.
The win was credited to Bullet Joe Rogan(8-14) who went 8 and 2/3
innings allowing 4 runs. Jack Morris(4-13) was the losing pitcher.
With this win, Las Vegas has a 50-58 record. They have been 4-6
lately. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Cheyenne is 2-8
of late and now has an overall record of 42-66, worst in the division.

The streaking Anchorage Gold had very little trouble at Shibe Park
downing the Honolulu Islanders. The score was 6 to 1.
Dennis Martinez(6-5) gave Anchorage a solid outing. He went 6 and 2/3
innings and surrended up 7 hits and no walks. For the game Anchorage
out-hit Honolulu 10 to 7.
Don Newcombe recorded his 4th save. The losing pitcher was Urban
Shocker(4-2) in relief. He allowed 3 runs and 4 hits in 3 innings.
NEW ORLEANS AT MEMPHIS

The New Orleans Pelicans and the Memphis Belles locked up in an
exciting one-run game at Polo Grounds. The final score was the New
Orleans Pelicans 5, the Memphis Belles 4.
Memphis was unable to recover after New Orleans went ahead in the 2nd
inning plating one baserunner. Roger Maris took matters into his own
hands and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'. New Orleans totaled 11
hits on the afternoon.
Pud Galvin(11-6) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Carl
Mays got the save, his 3rd. The loss was charged to Mickey Welch
(10-9). He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 8 and 2/3 innings of
work.
'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Galvin said.
ESCANABA AT DES MOINES

Shortstop Martin Dihigo knocked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Babe Ruth
went the distance at Wrigley Field as the Escanaba Yoopers beat the Des
Moines Pickers 12 to 4.
Dihigo enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He belted a three-run homer
in the 2nd inning and ripped a solo home run in the 6th inning.
Escanaba had a total of 17 hits for the game.
Ruth(12-6) lasted until the end allowing 4 runs for the win. Curt
Schilling(9-12) suffered the loss. Although losing the contest, he
whiffed 4 batters in 1 and 2/3 innings.
SASKATOON AT BUFFALO

Orlando Cepeda smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Crosley Field where
the Buffalo Nickels beat the Saskatoon Commodores 14 to 8.
It was a good day for Buffalo thanks to Cepeda. He smashed a bases-
empty 'big-fly' in the 6th inning, ripped a single plating two runs in
the 7th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 8th
inning. Buffalo dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different
innings.
The win went to Carl Hubbell(14-6) who allowed 5 runs in 6 innings. Lon
Warneke earned his 3rd save. Jim Bunning(7-10) ended up with the loss.
He served up 4 homeruns in his 6 innings.
'The ball was jumping off my bat' Cepeda said. 'I didn't do anything
differently, it's the same way I always approach the game.'
ORLANDO AT ALEXANDRIA

Hank Greenberg left the yard and had 4 RBI and Christy Mathewson had a
complete game as the Alexandria Dukes defeated the Orlando Wave by the
score of 13 to 5 at Tiger Stadium.
Greenberg made sure the Alexandria fans enjoyed themselves. He clubbed
a two-run home run in the 2nd inning and doubled bringing home two
baserunners in the 3rd inning. Alexandria managed 16 hits in their
victory.
The winning pitcher was Mathewson(15-6) who allowed 5 runs for the
game. Al Spalding(5-3) absorbed the loss. He pitched 1/3 of an inning
and surrendered 5 hits and no walks.
