Hack Wilson smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at The Astrodome where the
Buffalo Nickels beat the Saskatoon Commodores by the score of 6 to 3.
 
Wilson was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors.  He cracked a solo homerun in the 3rd
inning and belted a three-run homer in the 4th inning.  Saskatoon out-hit
Buffalo 10 to 6, but Buffalo ended up with more runs.  
 
Jim Kaat(1-0) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Old Hoss
Radbourn recorded his 1st save.  Jim Bunning(0-1) was given the loss.  He
served up 3 homeruns in his 8 and 1/3 innings.  
 
 
LAS VEGAS AT CHEYENNE

Ryne Sandberg went deep and had 5 RBI as the Las Vegas Miners came back to win
one over Cheyenne Gunslingers, 13 to 11.
 
Las Vegas erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
plating 3 runs on 3 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Reggie Jackson
keyed the rally when he lined a single.  Mike Schmidt got his chance to keep
things going, but he went down on strikes.  Ed Delahanty then slapped a
single.  Buck Ewing followed next and he drew a walk to load the bases.
Sandberg came to the plate and doubled.  Cheyenne could do no damage in the
bottom of the 9th.  
 
Allie Reynolds(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Rollie
Fingers(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.  He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 1
and 2/3 innings.  
 
Gene Mauch was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at
bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?
You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead.  But, hey, that's what
makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over
'til its over.'
 
DES MOINES AT ESCANABA

Dave Winfield ripped 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Escanaba Yoopers defeated
the Des Moines Pickers 12 to 5 at Baker Bowl.
 
Winfield enjoyed a great day at the plate.  Every time he came up in the
latter innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering.  He delivered a solo
blast in the 2nd inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in
the 3rd inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 7th inning.
Escanaba ended up with 15 hits for the game while Des Moines had 8.  
 
Babe Ruth(1-0) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 5 runs for the win. The losing
pitcher was Curt Schilling(0-1).  He surrended 3 homeruns in his 1 and 1/3
innings.  
 
'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Winfield said. 'Whenever
I would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'
 
MEMPHIS AT NEW ORLEANS

Pud Galvin allowed Bucky Harris to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
and Harold Baines cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the New Orleans Pelicans
defeated the Memphis Belles by the score of 6 to 2 at Fenway
Park.
 
Galvin(1-0) pitched well for New Orleans in their victory.  He went 9 innings
surrendering 12 hits and 2 walks.  New Orleans had a total of 11 hits for the
game.  
 
Mickey Welch(0-1) ended up with the loss.  He was knocked around by New
Orleans, allowing 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.
 
ANCHORAGE AT HONOLULU

Catcher Carlton Fisk touched them all and had 2 RBI at Shibe Park where the
Anchorage Gold beat the Honolulu Islanders 5 to 4.
 
Anchorage took the lead for good in the top of the 5th inning plating an
isolated run utilizing 2 base hits.  Mel Ott laced a base-knock.  Barry Bonds
stepped up to the plate and he laced a single, and an error was also
committed.  Ken Griffey Jr then hit a sacrifice fly.  Bill Terry struck out,
unable to help the rally.  Dave Parker stepped into the box and was walked
intentionally.  Harry Hooper was next to the plate, but was promptly struck
out.  Honolulu had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.  
 
The winning pitcher was Jim Palmer(1-0) who allowed 4 runs in 8 and 1/3
innings. Luis Tiant earned the save, his 1st.  The loss was charged to Greg
Maddux(0-1).  
 
'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Palmer said,
'this was one of those times.'
 
ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Graig Nettles hit 2 doubles as the Orlando Wave won a heart-stopping victory
over the Alexandria Dukes, 5 to 3.
 
Orlando came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs
on 2 base hits.  After two were out Carl Yastrzemski was the sparkplug when
he laced a base-hit.  Biz Mackey stepped into the batter's box and he cracked
a two-run shot resulting in a mighty exciting win for Orlando and the 45,215
home town fans in attendance.  Although they lost, Alexandria did out-hit
Orlando 15 to 9.  
 
The win went to Burleigh Grimes(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning.
Juan Marichal(0-1) was the loser.  He gave up 5 runs and 9 hits in 8 and 2/3
innings.
