Left fielder Ralph Kiner hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI at The Astrodome as the Saskatoon Commodores beat the Buffalo Nickels 6 to 5.

In the 6th inning Saskatoon scored 4 runs when they came up with 4 base hits. The key at-bat was by George Brett who elicited a roar from the hometown fanswhen he tripled bringing in two baserunners.  Despite losing, Buffalo out-hit Saskatoon 14 to 10. 

Wilbur Cooper(1-0) was the winner allowing 5 runs in 7 innings. Cooper washelped out by Hoyt Wilhelm who recorded his 1st save.  Addie Joss(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed 10 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. 

LAS VEGAS AT CHEYENNE

Harry Heilmann jacked one out of the ballyard as the Cheyenne Gunslingers defeated the Las Vegas Miners in 12 innings by a score of 6 to 5 at Forbes Field.

Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings.  Finally, Cheyenne prevailed in the 12th inning.  After an out was recorded, Bill Freehan stroked a one-base hit.  Rickey Henderson struck out, unable to help the rally.  Dave Concepcion then lashed a single.  Mickey Mantle was up next and he drew a walk to load the bases.  Jud Wilson came up to bat and lined a base-hit resulting in an exciting win for Cheyenne and a wild post-game

celebration by the home town fans.  Cheyenne and Las Vegas each finished the night with 16 hits. 

Dan Quisenberry(1-0) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. The loss was charged to John Clarkson(0-1) in relief.  He pitched 3 innings giving up 3 hits and 3 walks.

DES MOINES AT ESCANABA

Tony Fernandez had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Baker Bowl as the Escanaba Yoopers beat the Des Moines Pickers by the count of 7 to 4.

Bob Gibson(1-0) delivered a fine performance for Escanaba.  He went 7 innings surrendering 7 hits and 4 walks.  For the game Escanaba out-hit Des Moines 12 to 9. 

Gibson got relief help from Bruce Sutter who gained credit for his 1st save.  Lefty Grove(0-1) absorbed the loss.  He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 8 hits and 2 walks.

MEMPHIS AT NEW ORLEANS

Satchel Paige racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts and shortstop Vern Stephens had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the New Orleans Pelicans topped the Memphis Belles by a score of 4 to 2 at Fenway Park.

Paige(1-0) was very good in the win.  He didn't allow much, just 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings and gave up 2 homeruns.  Memphis tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 

Three Finger Brown(0-1) was given the loss.  Paige was pleased with his performance.  He noted, 'I had good zip on my pitches.  Just as important, my location was right on.  The fans really got into the game too - that always helps me.  Now, if I can only do that again in my next outing.'

ANCHORAGE AT HONOLULU

Mel Ott had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Anchorage Gold outscored the Honolulu Islanders 12 to 11.

Anchorage won the game with a rally in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs on 3 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Ott initiated the scoring spurt when he stroked a base-hit.  After another out, Ken Griffey Jr came up and he drew a walk.  Bill Madlock then ripped a single.  Frank Thomas came up and he laced a base-hit.  Dick Allen got his chance to keep things going, but he went down

on strikes.  Honolulu made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

The win went to Kid Nichols(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 2 innings. Nichols got help from Don Newcombe who earned his 1st save.  Ron Guidry(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief. 

Connie Mack was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all professionals.  We've been through this many times - it's the nature of the game.  We'll be fine - as for me - I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'

ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Roy Campanella had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Christy Mathewson completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Alexandria Dukes defeated the Orlando Wave 5 to 3 at Ebbets Field.

Alexandria had 3 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning.  Alexandria had 11 hits for the night.  Mathewson(1-0) allowed 3 runs on the game. Smokey Joe Williams(0-1) was tagged with the loss.  He was touched for 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
