Ken Singleton blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI at The Astrodome as the
Saskatoon Commodores beat the Buffalo Nickels by the count of 14 to
8.
Saskatoon set the tone of the game in the first inning as they scored 3 runs
on 3 base hits. The biggest moment was provided by George Sisler who excited
the crowd when he tripled bringing home two baserunners. Overall Saskatoon
out-hit Buffalo 16 to 11.
Walter Johnson(1-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 7 innings. Hoyt Wilhelm
recorded his 2nd save. Tim Keefe(0-1) was the loser. He was unable to
control the Saskatoon offense and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3
innings.
LAS VEGAS AT CHEYENNE

Pete Alexander had a complete game and center fielder Tris Speaker had 4 hits
and scored 3 times as the Las Vegas Miners defeated the Cheyenne Gunslingers
by the score of 7 to 1 at Forbes Field.
Alexander(1-0) gave Las Vegas a solid outing. He surrendered 10 hits and 5
walks in 9 innings. Las Vegas totaled 15 hits on the afternoon.
Mickey Lolich(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing
12 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
DES MOINES AT ESCANABA

Willie McCovey smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Baker Bowl as the Escanaba
Yoopers beat the Des Moines Pickers 7 to 6.
McCovey had a good evening at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'
in the 3rd inning and blasted a two-run home run in the 5th inning. Des
Moines had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Ray Brown(1-0) went 8 innings allowing 6 runs for the win. Brown was helped
out by Bruce Sutter who recorded his 2nd save. Cy Young(0-1) was given the
loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 and 1/3 innings of work.
'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Bobby Cox said. 'It's bad
enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves,
that's really bad.'
MEMPHIS AT NEW ORLEANS

Josh Gibson went yard and had 4 RBI and Babe Adams went the distance as the
New Orleans Pelicans defeated the Memphis Belles by a score of 4 to 2 at
Fenway Park.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Gibson. He doubled scoring two baserunners in the 3rd inning and
cracked a two-run shot in the 7th inning. New Orleans had only 6 hits for
the night.
Adams(1-0) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Eddie Plank(0-1)
ended up with the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 7
walks.
ANCHORAGE AT HONOLULU

George Davis had 3 base hits and 4 RBI and Ed Walsh pitched a complete game as
the Anchorage Gold crushed the Honolulu Islanders 15 to 1.
Honolulu was unable to claim the lead after Anchorage went ahead in the top of
the 2nd inning scoring a single run. Barry Bonds reached on an error.
George Foster next to the plate and he slapped a single. Dick Allen then
would hit into a force play. Bill Madlock came up and he grounded into a
double play. Anchorage kept the scorekeepers busy in the 5th inning with 5
runs on 5 hits and the 7th inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits. Anchorage
kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different
innings.
The win was credited to Walsh(1-0) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.
Warren Spahn(0-1) took the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runs
in 5 innings.
ALEXANDRIA AT ORLANDO

Lou Whitaker had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and Sandy Koufax shutout Orlando while
allowing the Alexandria bullpen a day-off at Ebbets Field where the
Alexandria Dukes beat the Orlando Wave by the score of 5 to 0.
Koufax(1-0) was in control of the game from the outset. He gave up just 5
hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th
inning with no runs scored after that point.
Kevin Brown(0-1) suffered the loss. He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 8
hits and 3 walks.
