First baseman Stan Musial hit 2 doubles at Baker Bowl where the Orlando
Wave beat the Escanaba Yoopers in 13 innings 4 to 3.
 
The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings.  Finally, Orlando
pulled the game out in the 13th inning.  Musial doubled.  Max Carey was
next and he delivered a single.  Nap Lajoie then hit a sacrifice fly. 
Bobby Wallace followed and he lined a base-hit.  Elston Howard was next
to the plate, but was promptly struck out.  Biz Mackey was a strikeout
victim, unable to help out.  Orlando finished with 10 hits while
Escanaba ended up with 7. 
 
Al Spalding(5-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Spalding
got help from Waite Hoyt who was credited with his 6th save.  Bruce
Sutter(3-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.

Walter Johnson held Memphis to 3 hits at The Astrodome where the
Saskatoon Commodores beat the Memphis Belles by the score of 8 to 1.
 
Memphis fell behind quickly as the Saskatoon offense came through in
the first inning when they scored 4 runs on 1 hit.  That early scoring
was all that Johnson(7-8) needed.  Saskatoon totaled 8 hits on the
night. 
 
The loss was charged to Stan Coveleski(3-10).  He served up 3 gopher
balls in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Rafael Palmeiro lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI as the
Honolulu Islanders defeated the Anchorage Gold by the score of 9 to 7
at Shibe Park.
 
Honolulu jumped on top to stay in the 3rd inning as they scored 3 runs
on 3 base hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Palmeiro who
electrified Shibe Park when he belted a three-run homer.  The Anchorage
offense proved no trouble in the 9th. 
 
Warren Spahn(6-10) allowed 7 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings, and picked up
the victory. Spahn got help from Red Faber who earned his 6th save.  Ed
Walsh(11-5) was given the loss.  He was knocked around, surrendering 8
runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. 
 
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even
without his best stuff,' Connie Mack said after the game.  'Spahn did
not have command of his pitches most of the night, but he proved he
really knew how to pitch!'
 
NEW ORLEANS AT CHEYENNE

Pete Rose had 3 base hits and Randy Johnson retired 16 batters on
strikeouts at Forbes Field as the Cheyenne Gunslingers beat the New
Orleans Pelicans in 11 innings by the count of 4 to 3.
 
The score was tied at 3 after nine. Cheyenne came out the victor in the
11th inning.  After an out was recorded, Rod Carew drew a walk.  After
another out, Wally Schang stepped in and he drew a walk.  Rose then
lined a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for Cheyenne and a
raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.  Overall Cheyenne
out-hit New Orleans 10 to 7. 
 
Rollie Fingers(5-7) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1
inning.  Mel Harder(3-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He
surrendered 1 hit and 2 walks in 1 and 1/3 innings. 
 
With this win, Cheyenne has a 38-50 record. They have been 3-7 lately. 
With the loss, the New Orleans ballclub's record is 44-40.
 
DES MOINES AT LAS VEGAS

Arky Vaughan cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Des Moines Pickers
bested the Las Vegas Miners 9 to 6 at Yankee Stadium.
 
Vaughan had a good day at the plate.  He ripped a solo home run in the
1st inning, lashed a single which scored a run in the 5th inning and
cracked a two-run shot in the 7th inning.  Although they lost, Las
Vegas did out-hit Des Moines 14 to 10. 
 
The win went to Nolan Ryan(10-5) who allowed 6 runs in 7 innings. Tom
Henke gained credit for his 2nd save.  Ed Lopat(3-8) took the loss.  He
surrended 4 homeruns in his 7 and 2/3 innings. 
 
Des Moines continued their winnings ways improving their record to a
division leading 44-40.  They are 8-2 in their last ten games.  Las
Vegas has a record of 40-45 after the loss.
 
BUFFALO AT ALEXANDRIA

Lou Whitaker had 4 hits and scored 3 times at Tiger Stadium as the
Alexandria Dukes beat the Buffalo Nickels 12 to 3.
 
Alexandria took the lead for good in the 3rd inning plating 2 runs on 2
hits.  Cool Papa Bell got things going when he reached on an error. 
Ted Simmons followed, but he was set down on strikes.  Whitaker then
ripped a single.  Honus Wagner was up next and he ripped a base-hit. 
Wagner took second on the throw.  Fred Clarke came up to bat and hit a
sacrifice fly.  Buffalo was out-hit by Alexandria, 15 hits to 4. 
 
Sandy Koufax(12-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Tim Keefe(8-10) was charged with the loss.  He allowed
Alexandria 9 runs in 4 innings of work. 
 
Alexandria now has a record of a division leading 54-31.  With the
loss, Buffalo has a record of 3-7 lately, 41-44 overall.

The Las Vegas Miners edged the Des Moines Pickers at Yankee Stadium by the
score of 6 to 5.
 
Las Vegas promptly took the lead in their half of the first plating an
isolated run on 4 base hits.  Des Moines tried unsuccessfully to come back in
the 9th.  
 
Tom Seaver(5-2) got the win allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. John Clarkson earned
the save, his 1st.  Lefty Grove(6-6) took the loss.  He served up 4 gopher
balls in 7 innings.  
 
Despite losing Bobby Cox was optimistic after the game.  'We'll get over this
one.  Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't.  Any one of a
dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'

Satchel Paige tossed a complete game at Forbes Field where the New Orleans
Pelicans beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers in 10 innings by the score of 9 to
5.
 
Both teams had scored 5 runs after nine full innings.  New Orleans won the
hard fought contest in the 10th inning.  New Orleans and Cheyenne each
finished the afternoon with 9 hits.  
 
Paige(12-5) was the winner allowing 5 runs for the game. Rollie Fingers(4-7)
absorbed the loss in relief.  He surrendered 3 runs and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3
innings.

Hack Wilson jacked one out of the ballyard and Addie Joss allowed Joe McCarthy
to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Buffalo Nickels outscored
the Alexandria Dukes 4 to 1.
 
Joss(8-5) gave Buffalo a solid outing.  He went 9 innings allowing 9 hits and
1 walk lowering his ERA to 4.21.  Buffalo finished with 7 hits in the
victory.  
 
The losing pitcher was Lefty Gomez(2-2).  He pitched 9 innings allowing 7 hits
and 5 walks. 'Ahhh, how sweet it is,' Joe McCarthy sighed.  'That win feels
like a tall, cool drink of water after spending far too much time in the
desert lately.'

Eddie Murray left the yard and had 2 RBI as the Orlando Wave bested
the Escanaba Yoopers 8 to 1 at Baker Bowl.
 
Kevin Brown(5-13) was solid in the win.  He was stingy on the mound,
allowing just 5 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.  Orlando out-hit Escanaba
for the game, 14 hits to 6. 
 
Catfish Hunter(2-11) was hit with the loss.  He pitched 8 innings and
surrendered 10 hits and 4 walks.

The Saskatoon Commodores nipped the Memphis Belles 3 to 2 at The
Astrodome in a hard fought contest.
 
Memphis never recovered after Saskatoon took the lead in the 7th inning
scoring one runner.  Memphis threatened in the 9th but Saskatoon was
able to put down the rally. 
 
Jack Quinn(5-3) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Hoyt
Wilhelm earned his 14th save.  Tom Glavine(7-7) was charged with the
loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 5 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings.

In a game at Shibe Park the Anchorage Gold got by the Honolulu
Islanders by the score of 4 to 1.
 
Jim Palmer(9-4) pitched a fine game.  He went 8 and 1/3 innings and
surrendered up 6 hits and 2 walks seeing his ERA drop from 5.28 to
4.96.  Anchorage had 7 hits for the night. 
 
Palmer got help from Luis Tiant who earned his 15th save.  Hilton
Smith(9-6) was given the loss.  He gave up 5 hits and 1 walk in 7
innings. 
 
 
NEW ORLEANS AT CHEYENNE

Satchel Paige tossed a complete game at Forbes Field where the New
Orleans Pelicans beat the Cheyenne Gunslingers in 10 innings by the
score of 9 to 5.
 
Both teams had scored 5 runs after nine full innings.  New Orleans won
the hard fought contest in the 10th inning.  New Orleans and Cheyenne
each finished the afternoon with 9 hits. 
 
Paige(12-5) was the winner allowing 5 runs for the game. Rollie Fingers
(4-7) absorbed the loss in relief.  He surrendered 3 runs and 2 hits in
1 and 1/3 innings.
 
DES MOINES AT LAS VEGAS

The Las Vegas Miners edged the Des Moines Pickers at Yankee Stadium by
the score of 6 to 5.
 
Las Vegas promptly took the lead in their half of the first plating an
isolated run on 4 base hits.  Des Moines tried unsuccessfully to come
back in the 9th. 
 
Tom Seaver(5-2) got the win allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. John Clarkson
earned the save, his 1st.  Lefty Grove(6-6) took the loss.  He served
up 4 gopher balls in 7 innings. 
 
Despite losing Bobby Cox was optimistic after the game.  'We'll get
over this one.  Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they
don't.  Any one of a dozen little things go different, and we come
out on top.'

Hack Wilson jacked one out of the ballyard and Addie Joss allowed Joe
McCarthy to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Buffalo
Nickels outscored the Alexandria Dukes 4 to 1.
 
Joss(8-5) gave Buffalo a solid outing.  He went 9 innings allowing 9
hits and 1 walk lowering his ERA to 4.21.  Buffalo finished with 7 hits
in the victory. 
 
The losing pitcher was Lefty Gomez(2-2).  He pitched 9 innings allowing
7 hits and 5 walks. 'Ahhh, how sweet it is,' Joe McCarthy sighed. 
'That win feels like a tall, cool drink of water after spending far too
much time in the desert lately.'
